Brockport Edges Hartwick, 38-35, in Conference Opener

Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – Brian McKean connected with Ian Gilhousen for a 30-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to lift The College at Brockport football team over Hartwick College, 38-35, in its first Empire 8 contest of the year.  The Golden Eagles improve to 2-1 overall while the Hawks fall to 1-2.

During Hartwick's second drive of the game, Sean McKean forced a fumble at the Hartwick 30-yard line that was recovered by Jake O'Connell and returned 31-yards for Brockport's first score of the game.  Brett Renzi converted the extra point to put Brockport ahead 7-0 less than ten minutes into the game.

The Hawks scored on their first drive of the second quarter to knot the score at seven but the Golden Eagles responded with seven of their own to go up 14-7.  The Golden Eagles advanced 15-yards with a reception from Jerry Thompson.  Two plays later, Joe Germinerio connected with Nate Wilkinson for a 23-yard touchdown.  Renzi's extra point attempt was good.

Rashad Baker interrupted the Hawks' ensuing drive with an interception that he returned 27-yards.  A Brockport fumble just a few plays later gave Hartwick the ball back but the Golden Eagle defense forced a three and out with two incompletions.

Hartwick tied it up again with a mere 41 seconds remaining in the first half.  Brockport went to work and ran six plays for 58-yards to go up 21-14.  Dan Andrews caught a pass for 27-yards and a Brockport first down.  McKean linked with Wilkinson for his second touchdown of the game, a 23-yard reception with just three seconds remaining in the first half.  Brockport would take a 21-14 lead to the locker room.

The Golden Eagles came out firing, scoring on their first drive of the second half.  Joseph Ortiz scored his first career touchdown after catching a pass from McKean for 62-yards.  The extra point from Renzi was good to increase Brockport's lead to 28-14 less than three minutes into the third quarter.

Two straight touchdowns from the Hawks would tie the game for the third time and make the score 28-28 entering the final frame.

Renzi saw his first field goal attempt of the season in the opening drive of the fourth quarter.  The junior booted it 24-yards to put Brockport ahead 31-28.

Hartwick scored on the ensuing drive to earn its first lead of the game and go up 35-31 with 10:52 remaining.

McKean's offense went back to work, running nine plays for 80-yards.  McKean connected with Nick Gomez for 15-yards to advance Brockport into Hartwick territory.  Ian Gilhousen took a 30-yard reception to the house and Renzi's extra point attempt was good to give Brockport the 38-35 edge with just over six minutes remaining.

Brockport's defense came up with a big stop, forcing a three and out.  The Hawks got the ball back again with just over three minutes remaining but O'Connell intercepted a pass to seal the win for Brockport.

McKean finished with 380-yards passing, throwing for three touchdowns.  Andrews rushed for 81-yards including a 31-yard play.  Wilkinson led Brockport receivers with 110-yards for two touchdowns while Ortiz finished with 94-yards and one TD.

Rashad Baker and Julius Brunson led the defense with six tackles each.  O'Connell tabbed five while Ryan Johnson recorded five including one tackle for loss.

The Golden Eagles were outrushed 106-yards to 92 but tabbed 27 first downs to Hartwick's 18.  Brockport recorded 510-yards of total offense to Hartwick's 462.

Brockport returns home on Sept. 24 to host St. John Fisher College in the 12th annual Courage Bowl to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times.
