BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team faced off against Houghton College in non-conference action on Tuesday, and just missed in overtime, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles fall to 1-8 on the season while the Highlanders move to 5-3 on the year.
The Green and Gold defense stood strong for the opening 18 minutes of play, holding off several Houghton advances. The Highlanders took advantage of a breakaway look, and posted a goal in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Brockport would score the equalizer with 12 seconds left in the half when
Abby Meagher set up a
Kelsey Devine shot that she would burry in the right half of the cage, to take a 1-1 tie into the break.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles took charge, gaining the lead with 16 minutes left to play, when
Amy Masciale picked up a rebound and sent it to the left side where Meagher finished in the bottom left for the 2-1 lead.
The Brockport advantage was short lived, as Houghton found the back of the cage in the 59th minute to knot the contest at 2-2. Neither team could work in a shot in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, it took less than three minutes to find a winner, as a Brockport foul set up a Houghton penalty shot that found the back of the cage to hand the Golden Eagles the 3-2 loss.
Brockport worked for 11 shots in the contest, with nine on goal.
Sarah Beam served as the Green and Gold net minder for all 72:35 of action, with 14 saves on the night.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Oct. 1 at SUNY Cortland.
