CANEADA, N.Y. – The volleyball team continued to impress on Wednesday, beating Houghton College 3-1 (25-13, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23). The Golden Eagles are now 16-2 on the season, and have regained momentum since their last defeat, currently riding a six-game winning streak.
The play was back and forth at the beginning of the opening set, before Brockport pulled ahead at the 5-4 mark and never looked back.
Noelle Poloncarz spread the ball to all of her hitters in the stanza, as
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore,
Jamie Schlesinger, and
Brianna Richardson all recorded three kills.
It was much of the same in the second, as the Golden Eagles traded points with Houghton early before taking an 8-7 lead and taking control of the set.
Sam Holdredge put down two balls later in the set, opening up the lead to 22-11 before
Aimee Spilman closed it out from the service line with an ace.
After the Highlanders managed to take the third set, Brockport came back in the fourth, winning it by a narrow 25-23 margin. Despite close score, the Golden Eagles trailed for only one point in the set, opening up an early 4-0 lead off two more Holdredge kills and a service ace from
Kathleen Irwin. The Highlanders fought all the way back to take a 22-21 lead late in the set before
Kelly Waters took matters into her own hands, registering three kills to give Brockport a 25-23 set victory.
The setting duties were split in this matchup, with
Rachel Fiser leading the way with her 28 assists, which is a new career high for the junior. Poloncarz, who ranks second in the SUNYAC in assists and assists-per-set followed with 17 of her own.
"I thought Fiser played very well," said head coach
Steve Pike. "She made good decisions, and did a really good job of reversing the flow of the game, so I was impressed with her performance."
12 different players registered kills, with Holdredge and Richardson leading the way with ten and nine, respectively.
Emma Stoltz and Waters also played big parts offensively, combining for 14 kills.
The duo of
Lindsey Luce and
Elena Grossman were a brick wall in the blocking game, combining for six of the teams eight block assists. Luce also contributed five kills from the right side.
Irwin led the defensive unit, picking up twenty digs in the four sets. Her two service aces also tied for the team lead in that category with
Karly Oliver, and Holdredge.
The volleyball team has a week and a half off before they travel to New Paltz to continue conference play against Plattsburgh, New Paltz, and Geneseo.
