Andrews Shatters Rushing Record in Heartbreaking Loss

Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport football team opened their 2016 campaign on Saturday, going toe-to-toe with Hobart College, but falling 41-35.  The first game of the season was a battle for both teams with the game being tied five times, and no team ever leading by more than a touchdown.  The Golden Eagles are 0-1 on the year, while the Statesmen are 1-0 on the season.

Running back Dan Andrews had yet another impressive performance, rushing for 184-yards.  The senior broke an almost 20 year old record, surpassing Adam Rodger, in all-time rushing yards.  Rodger tabbed 3,876-yards from 1995-98, but Andrews reached 3,916-yards with a 42-yard run in the fourth quarter.

A tight defensive game saw no score after the first quarter of play, but the Golden Eagles fought to break open the scoring on their first drive of the second quarter.  Brian McKean connected with Andrews for an 11-yard gain, followed by a Hobart penalty and back-to-back rushes from Andrews to complete the 80-yard drive to put Brockport on the board, 7-0.

The Statesmen would respond with two touchdowns of their own on two straight drives to take a 14-7 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half.

Brockport got the ball back with just over two minutes to play, and Ray Johnson returned the Statesmen boot 19-yards to advance Brockport to the Hobart 25-yard line.  Two straight rushes from Andrews and one from McKean secured the Brockport first and goal.  McKean again connected with Andrews for 8-yards and Andrews capped off the drive with a one yard run for his second score of the day.  Brett Renzi converted the extra point to knot the game at 14-14 entering halftime.

A strong Brockport defense would hold the Statesmen scoreless on their first two drives of the second half.  With 4th and one on their own one-yard line, Hobart attempted a fake punt but the pass was incomplete, giving Brockport the ball on a turnover on downs.  Andrews would take it from there, rushing for one yard to put Brockport ahead.  Renzi's extra point attempt was good, giving Brockport the seven point lead.  On their last drive of the third quarter, Hobart would capitalize on an 88-yard drive to tie the game again at 21.

The first four drives of the fourth quarter would see two touchdowns for each team, again tying the game at 35.  Ian Gilhousen caught a pass for 31-yards from McKean for his first touchdown of the season.  During Brockport's next drive, Andrews would break the all-time rushing record with a 42-yard run.  Marquez Jackson-Allen completed the drive with a 7-yard run to put Brockport ahead 35-28.

With the score tied at 35, Brockport was unable to get a first down, but a 31-yard punt from Eric Yaeger would put Hobart at their own 12-yard line.  Hobart scored a touchdown but a blocked extra point attempt would leave their lead at six with 2:37 remaining in the game.

The Golden Eagles started on their own 29-yard line with no timeouts remaining.  Five straight completions from McKean to Andrews and Joseph Ortiz would put Brockport at midfield.  Penalties proved costly for Brockport as they were faced with 3rd and 16 and were unable to convert, making the final score, 41-35.

Brockport out ran the Statesmen 195-yards to 70-yards.  The Golden Eagles averaged 4.1 yards per rush while Hobart averaged 3.5.  McKean finished with 20 completions for 152-yards in his Golden Eagle debut.  On the receiving side, Ian Gilhousen led the way with two receptions for 39-yards.  Ortiz tabbed 37-yards off of five receptions, while Nick Gomez reached 16-yards.

On defense, Julius Mizro led the Golden Eagles with 10 tackles, four on his own.  Da'Quan Brown accounted for nine while Julius Brunson and Jake Brickler each tabbed six.

Brockport will hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Alfred State College on Sept. 10 with kick off set for 6 pm.
