ERIE, Pa. – The College at Brockport women's soccer team faced off in their season opener against Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, falling in a close match, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles move to 0-1 on the year while the Yellow Jackets improve to 1-1.
The Brockport offense started the contest firing on all cylinders when
Stefanie Drago found the back of the net off a
Ashley Kabza pass up the middle, which she buried into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would let up two first half scores, at the 19-minute and 23-minute mark, taking a 2-1 deficit into the half.
In the second half, Brockport let up an early goal, trailing 3-1 with 39 minutes to play. The Green and Gold defense stepped up, and held Baldwin Wallace scoreless through the remainder of the contest, as the 3-1 score would become final.
"Although nobody feels good about losing a game, I think we're all actually pretty pleased with how we played today," noted first year head coach
Mike Idland. "We generated chances steadily throughout the game, and the opening goal was outstanding. Several players put in big time performances, especially two of our transfer players,
Maddie Siclare and
Ashley Kabza. I think we're confident that as we continue to improve as a team, we're going to win plenty of soccer games together."
Brockport outshot their opponents 19-9, with 10 Golden Eagle shots on goal.
Maddie Siclare led the way with five shots, while
Ashley Makowski, Kabza, Drago,
Carly Bulich and
Christina Leonardo each worked in two shots apiece. The Green and Gold were also awarded eight corner kicks to just one Yellow Jacket corner.
Catherine Eliasson stood tall in goal for the Green and Gold, seeing 75 minutes of action and picking up four saves, while
Daniele Ogrodowski came in for the final 15 minutes of play.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 4 when they play Wooster College at Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa.
