BROCKPORT, N.Y.-
Faith Welch became the tenth player in program history to score 1,000 points as The College at Brockport women's basketball team fell short against Plattsburgh State 58-55 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday night. Welch eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau knocking down a layup with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter.
Brockport scored six of the first eight points to start off the game,
Lindsay Johnson scored twice and Welch added a layup to give the green and gold a 6-2 advantage. With 37 seconds left in the frame
Schyler Laux connected on a triple to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 13-9. The Cardinals were able to cut the lead to two points hitting a jump shot as time expired in the first period.
Plattsburgh opened the second quarter of play scoring the first ten points to take a 21-13 lead. With 2:37 left in the period, Welch scored four consecutive points to pull Brockport within three, but the Cardinals scored as time expired taking a 30-25 lead into half.
The Golden Eagles dominated the glass in the first half of play, out rebounding Plattsburgh 23- 12,
Hannah Rehbaum pulled down six boards, and Welch led all scorers in the first half, scoring eight points for Brockport.
Plattsburgh was able to extend their lead to 12 late in the third quarter 43-31. Brockport responded ending the period on a 5-0 run, including a Johnson put back as the quarter expired, cutting the Cardinals edge to 47-38.
The Golden Eagles came storming back in the fourth quarter of play going on a 7-0 run, which was highlighted by Welch's 1,000 point bucket and capped off by a triple by Rehbaum to cut the Plattsburgh lead to 53-58. The Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the game as time ticked down, but were unable to connect on a three point attempt.
Rehbaum put together a solid performance recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The senior came through down the stretch scoring nine of Brockport's last ten points, including going 4-for-4 from the line. Johnson finished the night just short of a double-double recording a game-high 12 rebounds and scoring eight points. Welch finished the night with 12 points, connecting on 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles held a steady advantage in the rebounding department pulling down 47, compared to only 28 for the Cardinals. The Golden Eagles registered 15 offense boards, turning them into nine second chance points for the contest.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting SUNY Potsdam. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
