Brockport Drops OT Heartbreaker Against Fredonia

BROCKPORT, N.Y.-  The College at Brockport women's basketball team dropped a 73-70 overtime heartbreaker  to Fredonia on Tuesday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. With the loss Brockport falls to 5-13, 4-7 in the SUNYAC, and Fredonia improves to 13-5, 8-4 in SUNYAC.
 
With Brockport trailing 7-6 in the first period of play, Baily Pratt knocked down back-to-back three point baskets, to put the Golden Eagles up 12-7. As time expired in the first period of play Olivia LeBaron stripped a Blue Devil dribbler, hitting a streaking Pratt for a layup, putting Brockport up 16-14.
 
Schyler Laux gave the Green and Gold a big lift in the second quarter of play knocking down two three pointers one of which put the Golden Eagles up 29-26, with 3:56 left in the frame. Hannah Rehbaum scored Brockport's last two buckets of the half, as the Golden Eagles took a 33-29 halftime advantage.
 
As a team Brockport shot 50 percent from long range, with Pratt and Laux leading the way with eight points apiece. Pratt was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, connecting on a pair of triples, while Rehbaum chipped in with six points, pulling down three boards and dishing out three assists for the half.
 
Fredonia opened the second half scoring the first six points to take a 37-33 lead. Laux ended the Fredonia run connecting on her third three point basket of the game, cutting the Blue Devil lead to 37-36. Just over half way through the third period, the Green and Gold retook the lead, benefiting from an 11-0 run, which was capped off by another three point basket from Laux. Rehbaum, Emily Nestler, LeBaron and Faith Welch all saw shots fall during that run, giving Brockport a lead over Fredonia through three quarter of action play 51-46.
 
The Brockport offense went cold to open up the final quarter of play not recording a field goal for the first four minutes of the stanza, allowing the Blue Devils to take a 54-51 lead. Nestler scored the Golden Eagles first basket of the quarter to cut the Fredonia lead to 56-54 with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. Following back-to-back baskets by Rehbaum and Nestler the Golden Eagles tied the game at 58-58 with 19.4, and a tough Brockport defense forced overtime.
 
After Fredonia took the lead to start the extra frame of play, Pratt connected on a three pointer to tie at 61-61, on the ensuing possession a stolen inbound pass, which lead to a pair of Rehbaum free throws, giving the Golden Eagles a 63-61 lead with just over two minutes left in overtime. Fredonia went back up two points after knocking down a three point bucket, however, Brockport regained the lead with a Rehbaum layup and another three point field goal by Pratt . The back breaker came when Ferdonia completed a four point play to take a 71-68 lead with under 30 seconds left in the game. Brockport had a chance to tie the game, but the three point attempt at the buzzer was blocked, giving the Blue Devils a 73-70 win.
 
Pratt finished the night with a career-high 16 points, going 4-for-6 from long range, and 5-for-7 from the floor. Rehbaum scored four of her 15 points in the extra frame, pulling down seven rebounds while dishing out three helpers, and Laux, chipped in scoring 14 points, including four three pointers for the game. Nestler added 10 points, and a team-high eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
 
Brockport forced 18 Fredonia turnovers, which they turned into 15 points, while scoring 32 points in the paint compared to only 14 for the Blue Devils.
 
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Jan. 27, traveling to Oswego for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
