Huge Second Half Lifts Brockport Over Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y.- It was the tale of two halves as The College of Brockport women's basketball team negated an 11 point halftime deficit against Oswego State, to pull out a 70-62 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night.
 
With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 6-13 on the season and 5-7 in league play. With the loss Oswego falls to 5-13 on the season, and 2-9 in SUNYAC action.
 
The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as 14 points in the opening half of play, and trailed by 11 at the break. In the second half Brockport outscored the Lakers 46-27 to come back and capture the victory. The Green and Gold were able to hold Oswego to just 29.3 percent shooting from the floor and 14.3 percent from long range.
 
Brockport opened the game with a 5-2 lead behind a Lindsay Johnson lay-up by and a three point bucket from Bailey Pratt. Oswego answered with a 14-2 run and took a 16-7 lead, but the Golden Eagles cut the lead to 16-13 after back-to- back layups by Hannah Rehbaum and Emily Nestler.
 
The Green and Gold offense struggled to start the second period of play, going scoreless for the first 4:18 seconds of the frame. Johnson ended the drought with a layup, cutting the Lakers lead to eight. The Lakers extended their lead with a 7-0 run opening up at 33-19 advantage. The Golden Eagles fought back cutting the lead to 11 points at 35-24, on a Nestler layup just before halftime.
 
Johnson led all-scorers at the break, scoring 11 points, on 5-for-8 shooting, the junior also pulled down five rebounds and dished out an assistant for Brockport. The Golden Eagles shot 40.7 percent from the floor.
 
The Golden Eagles exploded out of the gate to start the second half, led by Rehbaum, who scored five straight points to cut Oswego's lead to 36-29. At the 7:28 mark the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 to regain the advantage at 39-38. Faith Welch scored four points during the streak, while Rehbaum, Johnson and Nestler all saw shots fall. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the contest after Nestler made a layup, and Olivia LeBaron connected on a triple. The Lakers scored as time expired in the third period, making the score 47-44.
 
The Green and Gold continued a strong second half, scoring the first six points to start the final frame. Megan Anagnostopulos and Bailey Pratt knocked down back-to-back triples to extend the Brockport lead to 53-44. Back-to-back Nestler layups grew the Golden Eagles advantage to 61-53 with just over four minutes of play. Welch iced the game away in the final minute of the contest going 3-for-4 from the line, to help the Golden Eagles pick up their sixth win of the season.
 
Brockport had three Golden Eagles in double figures, Johnson finished the night with 15 points, while Nestler chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks for the night. Welch added 13 points, going 4-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Rehbaum had a solid all-around performance scoring nine points, dishing out a team-high four helpers and pulling down six rebounds.
 
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow, Jan. 28 traveling to Cortland for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
