Brockport Football: Game Eight Preview

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 11 ranked College at Brockport football team has two conference games remaining this season as they try to wrap up their first ever Empire 8 title and earn a berth to the NCAA Championship Playoffs. This week they'll face a tough test at Buffalo State, a longtime rival in the annual I-90 Bowl.

DATE – TIME: October 28 – 12 p.m.
LOCATION: Buffalo, N.Y. – Coyer Field

Brockport and Buffalo State have matched up 35 times, having played each year since the 1982 season. The Golden Eagles broke a 17-17 series tie a season ago when they won 48-24 at home, taking the all-time "I-90 Bowl" series edge. QB Joe Germinerio was fantastic in that contest, throwing for 374 yards, a career high, and four touchdowns.

Germinerio has sustained that same level of success through this entire season, as the sophomore currently ranks in the top 20 nationally in completion percentage (9th), total offense (14th), passing efficiency (15th), and points responsible for (20th). His primary target has been DaQuan Hubbard, who ranks third in the nation in yards-per-reception, and has recorded 574 receiving yards and six touchdowns this season.

The ground game has also been outstanding for Brockport this season, rushing for 234 yards-per-game, a large part of the offensive unit that ranks eighth in the nation with 510 yards-per-game. Justin Morrison averages 7.3 yards-per-carry through the first seven games, and has rushed for 787 yards and nine touchdowns.

Even more impressive has been the rush defense, which is now ranked first in the country after limiting Hartwick to -50 yards on the ground last week. The unit is limiting teams to 32.6 yards on the ground this season, and just 1.3 yards-per-carry. The pass rush was nothing short of dominant last week, setting a new program record, and falling just one sack short of the NCAA record with 12 quarterback sacks.

At 7-0, and having defeated every opponent by at least 14 points, Brockport has been dominant all year, but never so much as the last five halves of football. Since trailing at halftime against SUNY Cortland, the Green and Gold have outscored their opponents 128-17, including two straight wins by 40 points or more. The success has allowed them to continue to rise in the D3football.com rankings, where they now sit at No. 11.

The 7-0 start this year rivals only the 2000 Brockport season in terms of program history. That year, the Golden Eagles finished their only undefeated regular season in history, finishing 8-0 before falling in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs. Brockport's deepest postseason run was in the 2002 season when they won in the first two rounds of NCAA's before falling to John Carroll in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

After this week, the Green and Gold will gear up for their final home game of the season, a senior day matchup with Alfred University that could potentially see them clinch the conference title.
