Brockport Cruises Past Plattsburgh, 3-0

GENESEO, N.Y. -  The College at Brockport women's volleyball won their 27th consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match with a 3-0 win over SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday evening at their second SUNYAC pool play event at Geneseo.
 
The Golden Eagles move to 11-7 (4-0 SUNYAC) on the 2017 season, where the Cardinals fall to 6-13 (0-4 SUNYAC).
 
The Green and Gold got off to a hot start with a kill and four service aces from Jamie Schlesinger and two kills from DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. After a few back-and-forth points, Brockport took control and extended their lead to 20-8 after a five-point streak. The Golden Eagles claimed the last three points of the set to win 25-10.
 
The second set was tight, as both teams were neck-and-neck until midway through the game. With the score being set at 15-15, Brockport strung together a five-point rally to take a 20-15 advantage with points from Ortiz-Whittemore and Brianna Richardson. The Golden Eagles closed out the second set 25-16 on another five-point run, with a service ace from Maddy Taylor and kills from Laiken Fox and Meaghan Mastro.
 
Brockport jumped out to an early 10-4 lead over the Cardinals in the third set. The Green and Gold's defense found some trouble late as Plattsburgh strung together seven points to trail 20-19. The Golden Eagles fought hard to extend their lead to 23-20, to then have Christa Mickol close out set three and the match 25-20 with two consecutive service aces.
 
Brockport's offense was led by Mastro and Whittemore who had nine kills apiece and Schlesinger who finished with seven and a .583 hitting percentage. Noelle Poloncarz paced the offense handing out 25 assists. Taylor lead the defense finishing with 14 digs and Cassie Birth accounted for 11.
 
Brockport will be back in action tomorrow to finished their second SUNYAC pool play event, where they will face their two toughest conference opponents, SUNY Geneseo at 12 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz at 5 p.m.
