Brockport Football: Game Ten Preview

CANTON, N.Y. – The No. 10 ranked College at Brockport football team clinched an Empire 8 outright title with last week's win, and will look to complete its first ever 10-0 season this Saturday at St. Lawrence.

DATE – TIME: November 11th, 2017
LOCATION: Leckonby Stadium – Canton, N.Y.

Brockport is 9-0 for the first time in program history, and have only completed the regular season unblemished once when they went 8-0 in 2000 before falling in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Playoffs. A tenth win this week would not only extend the regular-season record, it would also tie a record for total wins in a season (regular and post-season).

The Golden Eagles are one of just twelve remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division III, and have won each of their contests by a double-digit margin. Last week's game against Alfred was the closest of the year so far, despite the fact that the Green and Gold still pulled away at the end, winning by ten points.

These two programs have met just twice in their storied histories, and have not matched up in nearly 25 years since the 1993 season. That year, Brockport triumphed over the Saints 23-14 on their way to a 7-4 record and an appearance in the ECAC Northeast Bowl. Before that, they played in the season opener of the 1981 season, with the Saints coming out on top 21-7.

St. Lawrence was dominant a season ago, going 9-1 on their way to a Liberty League title, but has struggled in 2017, as they currently sit at 2-7 on the year. The two teams have played four mutual opponents in Utica College, Ithaca College, Buffalo State, and Hobart, all of whom the Golden Eagles have defeated while the Saints have dropped all four.

Despite the fact that Brockport has already clinched an NCAA Championship Playoff appearance, this game still has plenty of meaning in the way of regional rankings, where the Green and Gold currently sit at second in the east behind Delaware Valley University. A win would put them in good position to either hold that No. 2 ranking or move up to first, which will have implications for the 32-team playoff bracket.

With some games still to play, a number of players have already moved into the Brockport record books for their single season performances. Joe Germinerio is now ranked fourth for passing yards in a seson, and fifth for passing yards in a career, in just his sophomore season. Brett Renzi moved into a tie for sixth for points in a season, continuing his streak of consecutive extra points made. DaQuan Hubbard, who is now ranked first in the country in yards-per-reception, moved into eighth place in the Brockport record books for receiving yards in a season last week, and Joseph Ortiz moved into a tie for ninth for receptions in a season.

All of these players will look to build upon those numbers, as the Golden Eagles are guaranteed at least two more games this season, as they'll begin their NCAA Tournament run next weekend.
