BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team earned a crucial State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game against Plattsburgh State, 97-95. The victory moves the Green and Gold to a record of 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in conference, while the Cardinals drop to 3-4 on the season with a 2-1 mark in league play.
The Golden Eagles got off to an impressive 18-7 lead in the first five minutes of the half. The big men played key parts to the fast start, with
Justin Summers and
David Clark knocking in four points apiece. Sharp-shooter
Josh Nelson chipped in two threes during that run as well. The Cardinals cut the lead back to within one point, but Brockport fended off their advances and took a seven point advantage into half-time. Summers led the unit at the break with 17 points and six rebounds, while also protecting the paint with five blocks. SUNYAC Player of the Week
Hamed Shamseldin knocked in eight points while distributing seven assists.
Heading into the second half, back-to-back made free throws by Summers and an impressive layup by
Xavier Merriweather brought the Brockport lead back to double digits. The Golden Eagles didn't allow Plattsburgh within single digits for the following ten minutes, when the Cardinals mounted their comeback to cut the lead to three with 08:25 left in the game. However an impressive 17 points half by Shamseldin along with 12 by Summers kept the Green and Gold on top as the final horn blew.
Summers finished with a career high 29 points along with eight rebounds and seven blocks. Shamseldin recorded another double-double knocking down 25 points with 13 assists. Nelson showed off is three-point prowess by going 5-for-9 from beyond the arc.
David Clark chipped in ten points of his own while snagging eight boards.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 9 where they will host SUNYAC opponent SUNY Potsdam at 3 p.m.
