BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team pulled away from SUNY Potsdam in the second half to earn a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win, 99-77. The victory moves the Golden Eagles to 6-2 on the year and 3-1 in SUNYAC play, while the Bears fall to 4-5 on the season and 1-3 in league competition.
The Green and Gold fell behind 2-1 for nine seconds before reclaiming the lead off of a
Justin Summers layup, which they would not relinquish the remainder of the game. Back-to-back three's by
David Clark and
Josh Nelson, in addition to two made free throws by both Summers and
Hamed Shamseldin, extended their lead to double digits for the first time at the 14:46 mark of the first half. The Bears cut the deficit to eight a couple of times, but Brockport fought off those advances before using a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 16 with a minute left. Heading into the break, the Green and Gold held a 48-36 advantage. Clark led the team with 14 points and five rebounds, while Summers and Shamseldin both chipped in eight points.
Potsdam battled in the first six minutes of the second-half and cut the game to a 52-50 deficit. However, another timely 10-2 run by Brockport brought their lead back to double digits at the 11:49 mark. The Bears battled back to within six with just over nine minutes left to play, but clutch free throw shooting by
Tyler Collins and Shamseldin helped the Green and Gold run away with the game. The Golden Eagles used an 18-4 run to grab a 20-point advantage, and went on to win 99-77 as the final horn blew.
Shamseldin finished with 29 points thanks to 12 made free-throws. Clark and Collins each knocked in 18 with Collins going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and Clark snagging seven rebounds. Overall the team used eight blocks and nine steals to force 22 turnovers and converted those to 33 points.
Up next, Brockport will travel to Daytona, Fla., on Dec. 17 where they face off against Whittier College in the Mauro Panaggio Tournament.
