BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team dropped a hard fought overtime game against conference-foe Plattsburgh State on Friday evening. The 58-56 loss dropped the Green and Gold to 2-6 on the season (0-3 SUNYAC), while the Cardinals improve to 2-5 (2-1 SUNYAC).
The Brockport offense was on fire in the first quarter of play, as the combination of
Julianna Taylor,
Schyler Laux, and
Emily Nestler propelled them to 22 points in the frame. They stayed on top in the second as well, as eight points apiece from Laux and Taylor had Brockport on top 31-28 going into the break.
They extended that lead to as many as seven in the third quarter, but a late run from the Cardinals capped off by a pair of free throws from Anna Thompson allowed them to take a one point lead into the final 10 minutes.
With 0:33 seconds remaining in the game and Brockport trailing by one, Nestler drew a foul that sent her to the line with a chance to tie the game or take the lead. She hit one of two shots, leaving the door open for the Cardinals to win it with a final possession in regulation. The Golden Eagle defense held strong though, and a missed three pointer from Thompson sent the game to overtime.
Just as they had all game long, the teams went back-and-forth in the extra five minutes, with
Bailey Pratt and Nestler providing the scoring for Brockport. A free throw from Thompson put Plattsburgh up by two with five seconds left, and they were able to hold on after Nestlers shot attempt was block as the clock hit zero.
Nestler finished the game just one rebound shy of a double-double, as she grabbed nine to go with her team-high 17 points. Laux was right behind her with 16, while Pratt (nine) and Taylor (eight) combined for 17.
Zaria McCullough played the role of distributor, dishing out seven assists to go with her four rebounds.
Brockport will spring right back into action tomorrow afternoon with another SUNYAC matchup against Potsdam, with tip-off slated for 1 p.m.
