BROCKPORT, N.Y.- For the first time since the 2007-08 season The College at Brockport women's basketball completed the season sweep of Cortland, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night, 60-52. With the win the Golden Eagles clinch the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Conference Tournament for the second consecutive year.
The win improves Brockport to 9-15 and 8-9 in conference play, while the loss drops Cortland to 12-12 and 11-6 in league play.
Senior
Hannah Rehbaum put together a great all-around performance, scoring a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, pulling down nine rebounds, with three assists, three blocks and three steals.
The Red Dragons scored the first six points to start the contest, the Golden Eagles ended the run when
Schyler Laux connected on back-to-back triples cutting the Cortland lead to 8-6. The Green and Gold were able to cut into the Cortland nine point lead, ending the frame on a 9-2 run, making the score 18-16.
Megan Anagnostopulos scored five straight points during that streak, including knocking down a three pointer.
Lindsay Johnson made a layup as time expired in the period.
Brockport was able to regain the lead with just over four minutes left in the second quarter of play, when Laux knocked down her third three point basket of the contest. The Red Dragons retook the lead following an 8-2 run, Rehbaum made a layup as the buzzer sounded, cutting Cortland's lead to three points, 31-28.
Laux led the way going 3-for-3 from long range and scoring nine points. The Golden Eagles shot 40 percent from three point land in the first stanza, while holding Cortland to just 27.3 percent.
Another Laux triple ignited an 11-0 Brockport run, giving the Golden Eagles a 43-35 advantage just over half way through the third quarter.
Faith Welch scored six points during that streak. Brockport played lock down defense in the third, holding the Red Dragons scoreless for just over five minutes, and only surrendering 10 points.
The defense stepped up again in the final quarter of play just allowing two points throughout the first four minutes of play. A jumper by
Lindsay Johnson put the Green and Gold up 52-43 with just 6:50 remaining in the contest. Cortland was able to cut the lead to five points half way through the frame, but back-to-back layups by Johnson and Rehbaum put the Red Dragons away.
Johnson scored 13 points, pulled down seven boards, and Laux chipped in with 12 points and three assists for Brockport. Welch added nine points, a team-high four helpers and two steals for the contest.
The Golden Eagles wrap up their regular season tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 18 when they host Oswego State at 4 p.m. Brockport will celebrate senior day prior to tip.
