Balanced Scoring Leads to Golden Eagles Upset Of Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y.- The College at Brockport women's basketball team pulled off the upset in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) quarterfinals action on Tuesday night, with a 70-64 win over Oneonta. The victory was the Golden Eagles first win in the SUNYAC Conference Tournament since the 2008-09 season.
 
The Green and Gold were able to hold off a second half comeback attempt by the Red Dragons. Falling behind 57-54 with just over seven minutes left the fourth quarter Brockport was able to respond, ending the game on a 16-7 run en route to an upset victory.
 
"I am so proud of this group," said head coach Corinne Jones after the game. " We have had a long journey of 25 regular season games, and our vision was to be in the top six. We met our vision and completely competed for 40 minutes tonight on the road. Our program took a huge step forward and I am really proud of our seniors for putting us on their back."
 
Brockport got off to a fast start to open up the contest, scoring five of the first seven points. Bailey Pratt got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles, draining a three pointer. Pratt finished the period with six points, going 3-for-5 from long range. As time ran down in the first quarter, Faith Welch was able to draw a foul, and connect on both free throws, to break a 15-15 tie.
 
Halfway through the second period of play, the Green and Gold extended their lead, to seven points, behind a 5-0 run. First Hannah Rehbaum made a nice move finishing with a layup, followed by a three pointer by Pratt making the score 26-19. A layup by Olivia LeBaron put Brockport up 34-26 at the end of the first half.
 
Pratt led the Golden Eagles with nine points, connecting on three from long range and going 3-for-6 from the floor. Rehbaum chipped in with six points and five rebounds. Brockport held the Red Dragons to just 31.3 percent shooting from the floor, and 14.3 percent from long range.
 
Oneonta opened the second half strong,scoring the first six points,cutting the Golden Eagle lead to 34-32. Lindsay Johnson ended the run with a jump hook in the paint, on the next possession. Welch went the length of the floor making a layup putting the Green and Gold back up four points.

Oneonta retook the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter, following a pair of free throws. Schyler Laux answered back the next time down the floor, hitting a three point bucket, to put the Golden Eagles up 48-46 with just under four minutes left in the frame. A pair of Welch free throws gave the Golden Eagles a 52-50 lead entering the final quarter of play.
 
The Red Dragons took the lead again following a three pointer, to go up 57-54 with 7:36 remaining in regulation. With Brockport trailing by five points Welch picked an Oneonta players pocket, took it the length of the floor making the layup cutting the Red Dragons lead to 60-57.

The Golden Eagles tied the game on their next time down the floor, when Pratt connected on her fourth triple of the contest. The Golden Eagles regained the lead following a Laux floater in the lane, and a Rehbaum layup 64-60. Another Rehbaum layup capped off an 11-0 Brockport run giving the Golden Ealges a 66-60 lead with two minutes left in the game.  The Golden Eagles were able to ice the game from the charity stripe going 4-for-4 down the stretch to pull off the upset and advance to the SUNYAC semifinals.
 
Rehbaum put together another solid performance scoring a game-high 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 7-for-7 from the free throw line and grabbing eight rebounds. Welch, Pratt and Johnson each chipped in with 12 points apiece, Johnson also added eight boards for the Golden Eagles. Brockport also played very well defensively holding Oneonta to only 30.6 percent shooting from the floor and 20.8 percent from the three.
 
The Golden Eagles will look to advance to the championship on Friday, Feb. 17 taking on the second seed SUNY New Paltz. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
