Brockport Drops Season Opening Overtime Heart Breaker to Alfred, 11-10

ALFRED, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team opened their 2017 season on Wednesday on the road against Alfred University, dropping a narrow overtime contest, 11-10.
 
The Golden Eagles open the season with a 0-1 record while the Saxons improve to 2-0 in 2017.
 
Brockport came out strong to open their 2017 season, posting two first-quarter goals. Jake Recor netted back-to-back scores, with the first coming at the 8:37 mark, and the second at the 2:05 mark. The Recor goals were split by an Alfred score, as the Green and Gold took a 2-1 lead into the second frame.
 
The Green and Gold kept the strong play coming, as they netted three scores in the second period. Jake Giudice found the back of the cage off a Recor set up less than a minute into the quarter. After another Saxons goal, Liam Cannon netted back-to-back scores within 20 seconds for a 5-2 advantage. In the final four minutes, Alfred snuck in three straight to knot the contest at 5-5 heading into the half.
 
The heated battle continued into the second half with equal scoring in the final two periods of regulation. In the third quarter, Giudice opened the scoring for the Green and Gold, while Colin Blind and Colton Oliver each worked into the scoring column, posting an 8-8 tie heading into the fourth.
 
In the final period, Brockport was forced to play catch up as the Saxons netted an early goal. Giudice put away an equalizer off a Cannon set up, but Alfred posted the go-ahead score not long after. With 1:48 left in regulation, Giudice did it again, this time unassisted to knot the score at 10-10.
 
Needing overtime to determine a winner, the Green and Gold saw Alfred net the sudden death goal with 32 seconds remaining in OT, as Brockport fell 11-10.
 
Giudice led the Golden Eagle offensive efforts with four goals and an assist, while also picking up two ground balls. Cannon and Recor each finished with two goals and an assist apiece, while Recor snagged four ground balls.
 
On the defensive end, Blind led the way with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Steven Gurin and Mark Robinson each accounted for two CT's. Gurin scooped up an impressive seven ground balls in the outing, while Michael Caternolo picked up 14 face off wins. Conor Nowak saw all 63:28 of action, as he made 11 saves.
 
Brockport edged their counterparts in shots, by a margin of 43-42, but it was an even match up in shots on goal, with each squad firing 22. The Green and Gold also had the edge in ground balls (41-36) and faceoff wins (14-9).
 
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they open their home season on March 4 when they host Clarkson University, with opening faceoff set for 2 p.m.
