BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In the home opener, The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team just missed against Clarkson University, 7-6.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-2 on the young season while the Golden Knights move to 2-0.
On a sunny, but frigid day, head coach
Ben Wineburg's squad came ready to battle, in a close physical contest with the Golden Knights. Clarkson posted two quick scores in the first period, but Brockport fought to provide the answer, as
Liam Cannon netted back-to-back scores at the eight and five minute marks to knot the contest at 2-2.
The battle continued into the second frame, with neither team able to find the back of the net in the quarter. Out of the half, Brockport broke the scoring silence, with
Colton Oliver burying a
Brendan Fitzgerald pass for the 3-2 lead. That advantage was short lived, as Clarkson worked in back-to-back scores to take a 4-3 lead with 7:42 to play.
Jake Recor netted the equalizer to close the third period, when he put away a
Zach Cook set up for the 4-4 score.
Brockport saw their counterparts sneak in a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter, but a goal from
Mark Robinson broke the scoring streak to pull within one, with 11:46 to play. The Golden Knights worked one more goal past the Brockport net minder, but Fitzgerald answered with a goal of his own to pull within one with just over four minutes to play. Despite their best efforts, the Green and Gold could not find the back of the cage, and fell 7-6.
It was a tight battle in every statistical category, with the Green and Gold just edged in shots 35-33 and ground balls, 19-13. The Golden Eagles did force 15 Clarkson turnovers, while making 12 saves.
Steven Gurin led the way with four caused turnovers, while Cook picked up a pair of CT's. Cook led the way in ground balls, with five, while
Colin Blind, Cannon and Gurin each scooped up two ground balls apiece.
Conor Nowak picked up 60 minutes in goal, where he made 10 saves.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on March 11 when they host Keuka College at 3 p.m.
