ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 10 ranked College at Brockport women's lacrosse team went up against cross-town rivals Nazareth College on Wednesday, sneaking out a win, 6-5.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Golden Flyers start the season at 0-1.
The Green and Gold not only had to battle the Golden Flyers, but also had to fight the elements, with the high winds playing a factor in game play. Brockport fell behind early, and after a
Jillian Babinsky goal which tied the contest briefly, trailed for the majority of the first half.
Facing a 3-1 deficit, head coach
Stephen Wagner's offense found a rhythm, as
Cassandra Minerd took advantage of a free-position shot to break the Brockport scoring silence. The Golden Eagles rattled off two more quick goals to end the half, with
Jessica Boddery and
Taylor Thomas each finding the back of the cage to post a 4-3 lead to end the half.
Out of the break, the Green and Gold kept the scores coming, as
Andrea Zlinsky and
Hannah Cullen each worked in scores within 30 seconds of one another to post the 6-3 lead. Nazareth wasn't done, as they worked in a pair of goals, but their comeback came up short as Brockport held on for the 6-5 win.
In addition to their goals, Zlinsky, Thomas and Boddery each picked up an assist on the day. On defense,
Katie Curran led the way with two caused turnovers, while
Lauren Mancini and
Tess Knight each accounted for one. The Brockport net minder led the charge in ground balls, scooping up four, with Thomas and Cullen each adding two apiece.
Caitlin Cavallaro stood tall in goal for Brockport for all 60 minutes of play, where she made nine saves. As a team, the Green and Gold went 11-for-14 on clears and forced 12 Naz turnovers.
Brockport will be back in action on March 11 when they host Ithaca College at 12 p.m.
