BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team hosted State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, and in an all out battle, just missed against the league leading Plattsburgh State, 15-11.
The Golden Eagles move to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play while the Cardinals move to 8-4 and have a mark of 3-0 in conference.
Despite a strong opening, the Golden Eagles couldn't hold off a solid Plattsburgh team late in the contest. The Green and Gold got off to a hot start, with three straight scores to open play.
Jake Giudice,
Mark Robinson and
Brendan Fitzgerald all found the back of the cage by the six-minute mark to post the 3-0 lead. Brockport saw their counterparts work in four goals to close the opening frame, and claim a 4-3 advantage heading into the first break.
Brockport posted a strong second quarter, with a pair of goals from
Liam Cannon to open the period. After a Cardinal goal, Fitzgerald added his second score and Cannon added the hat trick in the quarter to take the 7-5 lead into the half.
After the Cardinals opened the second half with a score, the Green and Gold posted the two-goal answer with Giudice and
Matt Malecki scores pushing Brockport out to a 9-6 lead. The Cardinals added a pair of goals to pull within one, but Recor halted the streak to regain a two-score lead at 10-8 with 5:55 in the quarter. Plattsburgh erased the Golden Eagle edge by the end of the frame as they connected on two goals to knot the contest at 10-10 heading into the final period.
In the fourth, Brockport struggled to produce on the offensive end while they saw their counterparts score five straight to post a 15-10 lead. In the final minute of play,
Michael Caternolo connected with Giudice for a Brockport score, but their comeback wasn't enough, as the Green and Gold fell 15-11.
In was a close battle in the statistical categories, with the Golden Eagles taking the shots category by a count of 44-42, shots on goal 28-24, ground balls 37-29, and face offs 15-13.
Zach Cook and Caternolo were strong in the face off circle for the Golden Eagles, with eight and seven wins respectively. The pair also picked up six ground balls each, while Recor,
Conor Nowak and Cannon each snagged four GB's a piece.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 22 when they host SUNY Oneonta. The men's lacrosse team will be partnering with the HEADstrong Foundation for their game against the Red Dragons, as they team up to fight cancer.
