BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team had a strong showing on Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, downing SUNY Oneonta 10-7.
The Golden Eagles improve to 6-5 on the year and 2-2 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons fall to 3-10 in 2017 and 0-5 in league play.
The battle proved to be a tightly contested one, as the two teams would go tick-for-tack in the opening period of play. Brockport saw their counterparts strike first, but netted a two-goal answer.
Jake Recor connected on a
Kieran Fitzgerald pass and
Mark Robinson buried a
Jake Giudice set up for the 2-1 lead with 3:08 to play. The Red Dragons evened the count to close the frame, heading into the first break with a 2-2 tie.
In the second quarter the scoring saw an uptick, with Oneonta again finding the back of the cage to open play.
Matt Malecki worked to post the answer and even the count at 3-3. Brockport saw their counterparts net a pair, but Giudice halted the scoring with an unassisted goal to pull within one. The two teams would trade scores to close the half, with Malecki hooking up with Giudice for the final say, as the Green and Gold took a 6-5 deficit into the half.
Brockport tipped the scales in the second half, outpacing their counterparts, three goals to one in the third frame.
Liam Cannon found the back of the cage on back-to-back looks to regain the Green and Gold edge, 7-6. Robinson added a goal with 4:15 to play, and despite an Oneonta goal to close the quarter, Brockport took an 8-7 lead into the final period.
In a tight fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles held Oneonta scoreless and added two goals to pad their lead. Robinson connected with
Brendan Fitzgerald on both scores late in the period, as the Green and Gold held on for the 10-7 win.
Brockport edged their counterparts in nearly every category, including shots (42-30), shots on goal (24-15), ground balls (37-19) and face offs (19-2). The Green and Gold went 15-for-17 on the day in clears and forced 11 Oneonta turnovers.
Zach Cook had a mammoth day for the Green and Gold, accounting for 17 ground balls and going an impressive 19-for-21 in the faceoff circle, with a streak of 15 straight victories. On the defensive side
Colin Blind,
Kieran Fitzgerald and
Chris Irizarry each picked up two caused turnovers, while Blind scooped up three ground balls.
Dallas Meyers had a strong day in cage for Brockport, where he made eight saves in route to the win.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on April 26 on the road as they take on SUNY Geneseo. The Green and Gold will wrap up their home season on April 29 when they host Oswego State on senior day. The nine Brockport seniors will be honored in a ceremony held prior to the game's 1 p.m. start.
