Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – In State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss on Saturday, falling to SUNY Cortland, 16-7.
The Golden Eagles fall to 5-4 on the year and have a 1-1 record in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons move to 9-1 on the season and have a 2-0 mark in league play.
The Green and Gold found themselves in an early hole, as Cortland worked in three straight scores.
Mark Robinson took advantage of a man-up opportunity, burying a
Colton Oliver pass to cut the deficit to 3-1 with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. Cortland added a goal to close the frame, as Brockport trailed 4-1 heading into the first break.
In the second quarter, the Red Dragons opened with three unanswered goals, but this time it was
Brendan Fitzgerald who found the back of the cage to halt the Cortland run, posting a 7-2 score by the eight-minute mark. The Red Dragons added four goals, as the Green and Gold faced an 11-2 deficit at halftime.
In the second half, the scoring was much more balanced, with the Golden Eagles going tick-for-tack with their counterparts. In the third period, Brockport opened scoring with a pair of goals as
Colin Blind worked in his second goal of the season at the 7:46 mark.
Jake Giudice added Brockport's fourth goal off a Fitzgerald pass, to post a score of 11-4.
The Red Dragons matched the Green and Gold goals, but
Colton Oliver added the fifth Brockport score in a man-up situation, putting away a
Mark Robinson assist. Cortland added a goal to close the frame, as the Golden Eagles headed into the final period of play with a single-digit deficit, 14-5.
Despite Cortland scoring early in the fourth, Brockport bounced back with a pair of goals, with
Pete Barilla burying a
Jake Recor pass and Fitzgerald adding a goal off a Giudice set up to cut the Red Dragon lead to 15-7. Despite the Golden Eagle comeback efforts, the Red Dragons would add a final score, as Brockport would fall 16-7.
The Green and Gold edged their counterparts in shots, with a tally of 35-33 and dominated in the faceoff circle, taking 17 of 25 face offs.
On the defensive side,
Steven Gurin and Blind led the way with three caused turnovers and five ground balls each.
Zach Cook went 13-for-15 in face offs, with seven ground balls on the day.
Conor Nowak got the start, seeing over 20 minutes of action in the cage, making four saves.
Dallas Meyers came in for the final 39:23 minutes of action, and had five stops.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 15 as they continue SUNYAC play, when they host SUNY Plattsburgh, with opening face off set for Noon.
