BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team advanced to the 'Sweet 16' round of the 2017 NCAA Championship for the second straight season, as the Golden Eagles prepare to go toe-to-toe with the defending 2016 National Champions, Middlebury College on May 20.
This will be the first matchup between the two teams in program history, with Brockport entering the contest with a record of 16-2 while the Panthers boast a mark of 15-4 in 2017. To advance to the 'Sweet 16', the Golden Eagles bypassed Denison University, the winners of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), 17-7. Middlebury saw first and second round contests to make their way to the third round, defeating Plymouth State 13-1 and avenging a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament loss to foes Colby College, 10-9.
The road has not proven a challenge for the Green and Gold, as they are 8-0 on the year in away contests. For Middlebury, three of their four losses came on the road, with two of the four in overtime contests. The May 14 game at Colby in the second round of the NCAA Tournament was the third time the teams had met, with the first two meetings resulting in losses for the Panthers. The third time proved to be the charm, as the Panthers narrowly defeated Colby with the game-winning goal in the final 22 seconds of play to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Brockport and Middlebury have one common opponent in the 2017 season, with both teams taking on St. Lawrence University. Both programs came out on top of the early season contests, with the Green and Gold defeating the Saints on March 17 in a 6-5 road win. Middlebury also defeated St. Lawrence on their home field on March 8 to the tune of 13-7.
