Brockport Claims First Victory In Exciting Fashion

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Sophomore Julia Weyant scored the game-winning goal in the penalty stroke shoot out to claim The College at Brockport's first win of the season over Keuka College on Friday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field. Brockport now moves to 1-0 on the season while the Wolves fall to 0-1. This win was the first of head coach Krista Archambeau's head coaching career.

After a scoreless double overtime, the Green and Gold forced a penalty stroke shoot out to decide to winner. Following a Keuka goal, Emily Hall tied the score up 1-1 to keep the Golden Eagles in battle.

"Emily played a great game and had a crucial goal in the shootout to keep our team in it," Archambeau stated. "That goal really motivated the team to help push them to our victory."

After Brockport went up 2-1 in the shootout, the Wolves still had one opportunity to score. Goalie Sarah Beam made the game-winning save to give the Golden Eagles their first win on the season.

"Sarah had an amazing game in the net today," Archambeau noted. "She played great from the first whistle to the last and was a huge part of the victory."

The Green and Gold came out strong in the first half firing off ten shots compared to Keukas two. Brockport had four penalty corner opportunities in the first half, that led to many great scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert.

After a scoreless second half, the teams headed to overtime, where Margo Tremaine had a one-on-one with the goalie in the closing minutes, but sent her shot barely wide. After an intense defensive battle in the second overtime, both teams headed to a penalty stroke shootout to determine the winner.

Archambeau was thrilled with Weyant's performance in the contest after her game-clinching penalty shootout tally.

"Julia had an overall amazing game," Archambeau said. "Not only did she have the game-winning goal, but she was a crucial part of our defense. She stepped up to the ball well, which then stopped many opposing fast-break opportunities."

The Green and Gold were led by Tremaine and Katie Ziemba who combined for nine shots. Beam finished the day with seven saves and an additional eight more coming in the penalty stroke shootout.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday Sept. 5th, when they travel to St. John Fisher College for a  game beginning at 7 p.m.
