SALEM, V.A.—The College at Brockport women's soccer team dropped their season opener after a close battle against Lynchburg College on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 2-0. The Golden Eagles begin the year 0-1, while the Hornets start 1-0 on the season.
Brockport played strong defense in the first half, holding the Hornets scoreless and limiting their opportunities. The Golden Eagles had an opportunity in the 42nd minute, when a corner kick was sent into the middle of the box and a header sent the ball towards goal, but the Lynchburg goalie was able to stop the ball, sending the teams into the half knotted at a scoreless tie.
The Green and Gold defense was strong in the second half, and with good play by the goal keeper
Molly Graves they were able to keep Lynchburg off the board for most of the game. The Hornets broke through late however, scoring two goals in the final four minutes of play to steal the win.
"I couldn't be more proud of the team today," head coach
Mike Idland commented. "We have so many players getting to know each other and to go out there against a team that won a national championship three seasons ago and be tied with five minutes to play, to me that means we're definitely doing something right!"
Graves was strong in net for the Golden Eagles, saving eight shots on the day in her 90 minutes in net.
Riley Foti and
Molly Zientek both came off the bench strong, registering a shot-on-goal apiece.
The Golden Eagles play the second match of the Roanoke Tournament tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. when they take on host Roanoke College.
