ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team rolled to a strong win over the University of Rochester on Wednesday, 3-0.
The Golden Eagles improve to 6-4 on the year while handing the Yellowjackets their second loss of the season, falling to 7-2 in 2017.
Brianna Richardson led the way offensively for the Green and Gold, tallying 14 kills with a .591 hitting clip.
Jamie Schlesinger wasn't far behind, chipping in seven kills with
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore picking up six and
Laiken Fox nabbing five. The Golden Eagle offense was paced by
Noelle Poloncarz, who dished out 30 assists on the night.
Brockport served a strong game as well, tallying 10 service aces, with
Cassie Birth snagging five, while Polencarz added a pair. The defense had a sound night, with
Christa Mickol and
Maddy Taylor each sprawling for 10 digs apiece.
Aimee Spilman and Poloncarz each added four in the same category.
The Golden Eagles had a handle on the match from the opening set, quickly pushing out to a 12-5 lead after a four-point swing, featuring kills from Ortiz-Whittemore and Schlesinger. Another scoring streak, this time a six-point run with back-to-back Richardson kills, helped seal the deal, giving Brockport a 18-7 edge. The Golden Eagles held on down the stretch to take set one, 25-13.
The second set proved to be a closer battle, with Brockport forced to come from behind early. After trading points, the Golden Eagles distanced themselves from the Jackets, with the help of a six-point run, capitalizing on UofR mistakes and capped with a
Kelly Waters kill to establish a 22-15 lead. The Golden Eagles closed the door on the set, earning their final two points on Schlesinger kills to take the frame 25-19.
Down the stretch it was all Green and Gold, as Brockport posted a commanding 25-16 win to take the match. The Golden Eagles grabbed the final three points of the match, showing their muscle with a Richardson kill and back-to-back Birth ace's for the win.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action this weekend, as they hit the road for the Susquehanna Invitation Tournament. Brockport will face Carnegie Mellon University to open the weekend on Sept. 15 with a double header on Sept. 16, against Stevenson University and the hosts, Susquehanna University.
