SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The College at Brockport dropped both matches in the final day of the Susquehanna University Tournament, falling to Stevenson University and Susquehanna University. The Golden Eagles fall to 6-7 on the 2017 season.
Game One vs Stevenson University: L, 3-0 (16-25, 20-25, 20-25)
In the first match of the day the Golden Eagles started off hot , earning the first two points in the first set. The Mustangs answered with a four-point run to take a 4-2 lead. Both teams kept the game close, until Stevenson rallied off five points
to take a 13-8 advantage. Brockport fought back, but it was not enough as Stevenson took the first set with a final score of 25-16.
In the second set, the Green and Gold and Mustangs battled early, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. Brockport fell behind after a four-point streak, with
Stevenson taking a 11-6 advantage. The Golden Eagles attempted to get back into the game, but after a few late rallies from the Mustangs, they took set two by a score of 25-20.
Brockport jumped out to an 8-5 lead with kills from DeAnna Ortiz-Whittmore and
Rachel Millington. After a kill from
Jamie Schlesinger, the Mustangs went on a three-point run to tie the game up 12-12. Both teams went toe-to-toe trading points, but Stevenson eventually ended the third set by scoring the last five to end the game 25-20.
The Golden Eagles were led by Ortiz-Whittemore and
Lindsey Luce who both had eight kills.
Noelle Poloncarz led the defensive with 10 digs, while
Maddy Taylor had nine.
Game Two vs Susquehanna University: L, 3-0 (26-24, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25)
In the second match of the day Brockport trailed early in the first set, 7-1. The Golden Eagles battled to eventually take the lead after a five-point rally, 19-18. After the score was evened at 24-24, the Green and Gold tallied the next two points to take set one, 26-24.
Brockport found themselves down 10-5 in the second set. The Golden Eagles got their momentum going with a block from
Meaghan Mastro and Ortiz-Whittemore, and back-to-back aces from
Jamie Schlesinger. The Green and Gold then earned five straight points to take their first lead of the match, 19-18. Brockport held a 23-22 lead, but could not secure the win as the Riverhawks scored the last three points to take set two, 25-23.
Brockport started hot jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the third set. The Golden Eagles struggled as Susquehanna tallied nine points to take a 11-7 advantage. Brockport was able to come back and take a late lead of 22-21, but the Riverhawks closed out the game 25-23.
In the fourth set, the Green and Gold took a 11-8 advantage over Susquehanna. The Brockport defense struggled as the Riverhawks secured the next 10 points to take a 18-13 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back, but it was not enough as Susquehanna took the fourth set and the match, by a score of 25-23.
The Brockport offense was led by Mastro, Schlesinger, and Ortiz-Whittemore who all had 12 kills apiece. Schlesinger and Poloncarz paced the offense as they finished with a total of 45 assists. Taylor led the team defensively with 18 digs, and
Cassie Birth had 11.
For the tournament, Luce was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Brockport travels to Fredonia next Friday, Sept. 22 to their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play event, Facing off against Oswego State, starting at 7 p.m.
