Brockport Wins SUNYAC Opener Over Oswego, 3-1

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team kept their conference winning streak alive on Friday night, winning their 24th consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup with a 3-1 victory over Oswego State.
 
Brockport went toe-to-toe early against the Lakers, keeping the game tied throughout the first set. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead on a four-point run to take a 17-14 advantage, but the Lakers were able to close the gap, and took the opening set 28-26.
 
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the second set as well, as Oswego grabbed a quick 5-2 lead out of the gate. The Brockport offense then started clicking though, as they dominated the remainder of the game. The second set was highlighted with an eight-point rally to take a 17-7 lead, with points coming from Aimee Spilman, Laiken Fox, and DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. The Green and Gold finished strong, taking set two by a score of 25-11.
 
Set three was a battle for both teams from the start, keeping the game close throughout. Brockport jumped out to a 14-10 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the set, winning it by a score of 25-14.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed early in the fourth set, as the Lakers went on a five-point streak to take a 9-5 lead. Brockport was down 10-9, but went on a 10-point streak to take a 19-10 lead over Oswego. Jamie Schlesinger paced the streak with great serving and kills coming from Whittemore, and Meaghan Mastro. Brockport finished strong, taking the fourth set 25-15, and the match 3-1.
 
The Green and Gold were led by Whittemore who finished with 15 kills and Fox who accounted for 10. Noelle Poloncarz paced the Brockport offense handing out 33 assists. Maddy Taylor had a game-high 24 digs, and Cassie Birth finished with 11.
 
Brockport is back in action tomorrow at Fredonia where they finish their first SUNYAC pool play weekend, taking on Oneonta at 2 p.m. and Fredonia at 5:30 p.m.
