Game Notes
This will be the sixth matchup between Brockport and Utica, with the Golden Eagles holding a slight 3-2 edge through the first five. The Golden Eagles broke a two-game losing skid to the Pioneers last season when they posted a 35-28 victory, using 340 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to their advantage.
That rushing attack has been strong again this year for Brockport, averaging 243.3 yards-per-game, and accounting for nine of the teams 13 touchdowns.
Justin Morrison has led the way in that category, averaging 153 yards-per-game on the ground, including 227 and three scores last weekend against St. John Fisher.
That 38-7 win over Fisher marked the first time in four tries that Brockport came out victorious in the annual Courage Bowl. It also ended a 12-year winning streak in the game for the Cardinals, who had not been defeated in the Courage Bowl since its inception.
Overall, the Brockport offense has overmatched all three defenses they faced, averaging 34.3 points-per-game and 536.3 total yards per-game. They've also been dominant on the other side of the ball, as the defense is allowing just 278 yards-per-game, and has given up only three touchdowns thus far in 2017.
The team has received plenty of recognition over the past few weeks for standout individual performances, with Morrison most recently being named to the d3football.com Team of the Week. Previously, the offensive line was named to the Team of the Week after a 31-0 routing of Ithaca College, while
Joe Germinerio,
Eric Yaeger, and
Matt Szymanski have all been honored by the Empire 8 conference for their outstanding performances.
The Golden Eagles have outscored opponents by 76 points in the first three games of the season, due in large part to the fact that they're currently ranked second in the nation in time of possession (38:26 per-game). They've been outstanding on all downs, as the offense ranks third in the country in first down offense (85), and 18th in third down conversion percentage (53.3%). The defensive unit ranks first in the conference in both passing efficiency defense (89.04), and rushing defense (63.3 yards-per-game).
The Golden Eagles will finish up the first half of their season next week on the road when they travel to Cortland for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Red Dragons.
