Box Score 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team swept the competition in the second day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play beating both SUNY Oneonta and Fredonia State. The Golden Eagles move to 9-7 on the year and 3-0 in the SUNYAC.
Game 1: vs SUNY Oneonta: W, 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-21)
The Brockport offense took it to the Red Dragons early with a nine-point rally to take a 9-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles never looked back dominating he first set, in route to a 25-13 victory.
In the second set, the Green and Gold kept their offense hot as they built an 8-3 lead over Oneonta. Brockport stretched their lead to 16-10 after a three-point streak consisting of two kills from
Laiken Fox and a block from
Meaghan Mastro and
Lindsey Luce. The Golden Eagles found some trouble late and the Red Dragons tied the game, 20-20. Both teams traded points back-and-forth to set the score at 23-23, but Brockport scored the final two points to take set two, 25-23.
Brockport fell behind in the third set as Oneonta jumped out to an 8-5 advantage. Brockport was able to reclaim the lead with a seven-point run with great serving from
Cassie Birth and two kills from Luce. The Green and Gold held onto their lead and closed out set three and the match with a final score of 25-21.
Fox led the Brockport offense accounting for 10 kills, where
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore finished with eight.
Noelle Poloncarz handed out 26 assists and led the team in digs with nine. Luce had herself a night ending with seven blocks.
Game 2: vs Fredonia State: W, 3-2 (14-25, 25-27, 25,10, 25-22, 15-7)
In the second match of the day, Brockport battled to five sets with conference foe Fredonia. The Golden Eagles struggled in the first set, as they could not stop a hot Blue Devils offense. The first set closed out with Fredonia claiming a 25-14 victory.
The second set was a tough fought contest throughout, as neither team could establish more than a three-point lead. Brockport ended up losing the second set in extra points by a final score of 27-25.
The Green and Gold clicked in the third set, as they finished with a team hitting percentage of .500 which earned themselves commanding win of 25-10. Brockport jumped out to an 8-1 lead, then used their momentum to take a 18-5 advantage. Brockport closed out set three with kills from Ortiz-Whittemore,
Rachel Millington, and
Brianna Richardson.
Brockport kept rolling in the fourth set jumping out to a 6-3 lead with great serving from
Jamie Schlesinger. The Golden Eagles then lost the lead after a six-point run from the Blue Devils, who took a 14-11 advantage, The Green and Gold were down 22-18, but rallied the last seven-points of the contest with contributions coming from Mastro, Fox, Poloncarz and, Schlesinger to force a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles trailed early in the final frame, but after a four-point streak gained an 8-5 lead. Brockport claimed the next three points with some solid servings coming from Birth. The Golden Eagles took the last three points of the fifth set to earn an incredible comeback victory.
Ortiz-Whittemore paced the offense with 15 kills, where Richardson and Fox accounted for 10 apiece. Poloncarz finished the match handing out 44 assists and picked up two aces. Four different Brockport players accounted for four double digits digs.
Brockport will be back in action for their first home game of the year when they face D'Youville College this Wednesday, Sept. 27th, with the game slated to start at 7 p.m.
