LA VERNE, Calif. – In the final day of the Pacific Coast Classic, The College at Brockport volleyball team split against tough competition on Saturday. The Golden Eagles secured their first win of the season, downing The University of the Redlands, 3-1 before falling to the No. 25 ranked University of La Verne, 3-2. The games move Brockport to 1-3 on the young season.
Game One vs The University of The Redlands: W, 4-1 (27-25, 11-25, 25-20, 25-19)
In the first contest of the day, Brockport suffered from a sluggish start, and quickly found themselves in a 10-4 hole to start the match. The Green and Gold, not ready to throw in the towel, worked to erase their deficit, and knotted the game at 16-16 after a 7-2 run. The Brockport streak featured kills from
Kelly Waters,
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore and
Laiken Fox and a
Rachel Fiser ace.
After falling behind again, the Green and Gold grabbed their first lead following a block from
Brianna Richardson and Fox to post a 22-21 edge. The Golden Eagles couldn't close the door, and needed extra points to take the set. A Waters kill got the score back in their favor, as Brockport pushed for the 27-25 win.
The Golden Eagles struggled in the second set, ultimately falling to the Bulldogs 25-11. Brockport got back on pace in the third, but still had to work from behind. The Green and Gold went on a 9-1 run to close the frame, clawing back from a 19-16 deficit to take the set 25-20. The impressive run saw five straight Brockport kills, with four from Fox and a kill from Richardson.
In the final set, Brockport never trailed, posting a decisive 25-19 win. On four different occasions in the frame Redlands knotted the contest, but the Green and Gold found ways to score when it mattered to secure the 3-1 victory.
In the match, Fox led the offensive charge, putting away 10 kills. Ortiz-Whittemore and Richardson weren't far off, each chipping in eight kills apiece. Waters tallied seven kills while
Rachel Millington added six. Fiser directed the offensive unit, dishing out 30 assists in the match.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Maddy Taylor led the way, picking up 15 digs. Fiser,
Cassie Birth and
Kathleen Irwin each racked up eight digs apiece.
Game Two vs No. 25 University of La Verne: L, 3-2 (13-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11)
In the second match of the day, Brockport battled to five sets with the No. 25 ranked University of La Verne. The contest was a fight throughout, with the Golden Eagles just narrowly missing against the high-octane offense of the Leopards. After falling flat in the first set, missing 25-13, the Green and Gold came back with a vengeance in set two.
In the second set, Brockport pushed out to an early 4-0 lead, fueled by a pair of kills and an ace from
Jamie Schlesinger. Brockport fought to keep their distance, never relinquishing their lead in the set. A Waters kill put the finishing touches on the win, securing the set 25-20.
Brockport continued to roll in the third frame, again establishing an early 4-1 lead, using kills from Fox and
Lindsey Luce, and a Taylor ace to take the lead. Back-to-back kills from Richardson lifted the Green and Gold 7-2 over the Leopards, and the Golden Eagles never looked back. A three-point swing, with a pair of aces from
Aimee Spilman helped cement the set down the stretch, establishing a 21-11 Brockport lead. The Golden Eagles withstood a La Verne run, and capped the set with a pair of Waters kills to take the set 25-19.
In a back-and-fourth fourth set, the Golden Eagles lost their early lead and struggled to regain the advantage. The Green and Gold fought to tie the score twice, at the 14-14 mark, and again at 20-20, but couldn't overcome the strong La Verne attack, tripping 25-22.
The final set saw three early ties, with an Ortiz-Whittemore kill knotting the contest at 5-5. Brockport struggled to seize the lead, and despite pulling within one, couldn't stop the Leopards, falling 15-11.
Three Golden Eagles racked up double-digit kills, with Schlesinger leading the way with 12. Fox tallied 11 with Richardson adding 10 with a .350 hitting percentage. Ortiz-Whittemore swung for nine kills while Luce added eight.
Fiser directed traffic, tallying 24 assists on the day. Schlesinger pulled double duty, adding 18 assists and 19 digs to lead the defensive efforts as well. Taylor also tallied 19 digs, with Spilman and Fiser sprawling for 12 and 10 digs respectively. Spilman and Richardson each added a pair of services aces in the contest as well.
For the tournament, Fox was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Brockport will return to the court on Sept. 5 when they travel to take on Roberts Wesleyan in a single match, with the contest slated to begin at 7 p.m.
