BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team overcame a 24-point half-time deficit to earn a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win against Fredonia State. The win moves the Green and Gold to an 11-3 record on the year with a 6-1 mark in conference play. The Blue Devils drop to 2-12 on the year and 0-8 in SUNYAC games.
The Golden Eagles got off to a cold start in the first half falling behind 17-7 in the first 10 minutes of play. Back-to-back three-pointers by
Hamed Shamseldin and
Josh Nelson helped bring the deficit back to single digits, but Fredonia stayed hot from the field and extended their lead to 24 points as the half-time buzzard sounded.
The second-half was a completely different story for the Green and Gold as they caught fire and went on a 20-5 run to bring the score to 49-40 with 11:19 left in the game.
Justin Summers kicked off the second frame with a layup before back-to-back makes from behind the arc by
David Clark and Nelson. Head coach
Greg Dunne had his players turn up the intensity defensively, which created tough shots and disrupted the passing lanes, leading to 13 second-half turnovers for the Blue Devils. Brockport did not let-up even as they stared at a 13-point deficit with 9:50 left in the game. Sharp-shooter Nelson hit his signature corner three, followed by a made free-throw by Summers and a three by Shamseldin brought the team to within six-points with just over eight minutes left.
Brockport still found themselves down 69-66 with 1:24 on the clock, but a steal by Devonte Jones led to a layup for Summers bringing the Green and Gold to within one. Shamseldin charged down the court after a missed free-throw by Fredonia and drove to the right of a slip-screen by Summers to finish what turned out to be the game winning layup. A good free-throw by Shamseldin iced the game and completed the comeback.
The Golden Eagles shot 69% in the second half including 75% from behind the arc. Shamseldin led the way with 23 points, while dishing out five assists and grabbing five rebounds. Summers recorded his third double-double in four games by scoring 15 points and corralling 11 rebounds.
Brockport is back in action Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Buffalo State for a SUNYAC game.
