POTSDAM, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team extended their State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) winning streak to three straight with their 62-47 win over Potsdam on Friday evening. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-10 (4-5 conference) on the season, while the Bears fall to 1-13 (0-8).
The post players were once again dominant for the Golden Eagles in the contest, as
Emily Nestler (20), and
Lindsay Johnson (12) each scored in double figures. Johnson was also a force on the glass, completing a double-double by picking up 11 rebounds.
After a back and forth first quarter that saw Potsdam hold a 9-6 lead with 3:57 remaining, the Golden Eagles locked in, using a pair of
Krystal Hunter free throws and a late layup from Johnson to carry a 10-9 lead in the second stanza.
The Bears fought back in the second, regaining a 22-21 lead with 3:19 left until half, but once again a late Brockport run put them ahead. This time it was a combination of
Brianna Neeley,
Zaria McCullough,
Megan Anagnostopulos, and Johnson orchestrating a 9-0 run right before the half that gave the Green and Gold an eight point lead going into the locker room.
Nestler got it going in the third quarter, scoring seven of the teams 14 points in the frame, and helping them extend their lead to 13. The junior ended the game one rebound away from a double-double, snagging nine boards to go with her season-high 20 points.
The Bears closed the gap to as few as eight early in the fourth, but the physicality of Brockport proved too much to overcome, as the Golden Eagles were able to hang on for the 15-point win. The team outrebounded Potsdam 40-32, including 13 offensive boards that led to 19 second chance points.
Freshman
Zaria McCullough continues to grow as a scorer, this time registering 12 points to go with her four rebounds and three assists. Scoring came from all over for Brockport tonight, as all nine active players scored in the contest.
Brockport will look to get back to .500 in SUNYAC play tomorrow afternoon when they make the trip to Plattsburgh for a 1 p.m. tipoff with the Cardinals.
