BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon University on Tuesday, 94-83, in the first game of 2018. The non-conference victory moves the Golden Eagles to an 8-3 record, while the loss pushes the Tartan's to 4-7.
The Green and Gold grabbed the lead to start the game with a
Dwayne Daniel three-pointer and led for the first 11 minutes of the game before relinquishing the advantage with 08:13 left in the half. A fast-break layup followed by a good three by Daniel brought back momentum to the Golden Eagles, but an 8-0 run by the opponent put Brockport down five and entered halftime down 48-43. Daniel was the leading scorer in the first 20 minutes, knocking in 14 points and shot 4-for-6 from behind the arc.
After adjustments at the break, the Green and Gold unleashed an offensive onslaught, while combining that with spectacular defensive play, outscoring the Tartan's 51-35.
Hamed Shamseldin got the second frame started by converting a three-point play followed by a three-pointer by
Josh Nelson to take a 49-48 lead. Carnegie Mellon knocked in a layup, but another make from behind the arc by Daniel reclaimed a lead that Brockport did no relinquish. The Golden Eagles did a good job of icing the game sinking 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute of the game.
Defensively, the Green and Gold protected the paint impressively, swatting away 14 balls and racking up seven steals.
Justin Summers collected a career high eight blocks with Michael O'Hara blocking five of his own.
Senior guard Shamseldin led the team with 22 points with seven assists. Daniel chipped in 17 points of his own, while
Tyler Collins contributed 15 points with 13 of them coming in the second half. Summers finished with a double-double in points (12) and rebounds (12).
The Golden Eagles get back into conference play on Friday, Jan. 5 when they host SUNY Geneseo at 7:30 p.m.
