Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport Loses Heart Breaker To Cortland, 85-84

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team fought hard against a talented SUNY Cortland unit, but came up short by a score of 85-84. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 13-5 on the year and 8-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Red Dragons now sit at 15-3 on the season and hold a 10-1 SUNYAC record.

Senior guard Hamed Shamseldin got the game started with a three-pointer, but Cortland led after the first 2:40. Three straight three's by David Clark, Josh Nelson and then Clark again, tied the game for the Green and Gold at 14 and both teams proceeded to trade buckets until a dunk by Justin Summers gave his unit an advantage they did not relinquish the rest of the first half. The largest lead of the half for Brockport came at the 6:34 mark where a layup by Summers put them on top 44-32. The Red Dragons chipped away at the deficit, but remained behind 52-43 at half time.

Summers dominated in the first 20 minutes, scoring 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting. Shamseldin (8) and Abdoulaye Sow (6) facilitated the offense, dishing out 14 combined assists. Tyler Collins contributed key bench points (8) while recording two steals.

The Golden Eagles continued their strong play heading into the second frame, with Summers scoring 11 of the team's first 15 points. Those buckets by the sophomore big gave his team a 13 point hold on multiple occasions, with the last coming at the 10:51 mark. Cortland caught fire from behind the arc and cut the Brockport advantage to two with 3:44 left, before eventually taking the lead.

The final 1:52 were filled with momentum swings for both sides. A three-pointer by Cortland brought their lead to four, but Collins responded with a three of his own to cut the deficit to one. Following a timeout by Brockport, Shamseldin corralled a missed shot and assisted on another Collins three that put the Green and Gold up two with 52 seconds left. The unit found themselves down by one with 23 seconds left and were forced to foul, but the pressure of the crowd led to two missed free throws. The ball was placed in the hands of Shamseldin with eight seconds left, but he was unable to sink a contested layup and the team fell 85-84.

Summers finished the game with a career high 35 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. Shamseldin knocked in 18 points and dished out 13 assists for a double-double. Collins led the way off the bench, scoring 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

The Golden Eagles look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they host Oswego State at 3 p.m. for a SUNYAC game.
