BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team rallied back from a 15 point deficit to defeat the reigning State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champions, Oswego State, 74-70. The Golden Eagles now own a 14-5 overall record and are 9-3 in conference play. With the loss, the Lakers hold a 9-10 season mark and 6-6 in SUNYAC competition.
The Green and Gold held their only lead of the first half after an opening three by
David Clark put them up 3-0. The rest of the time, Brockport struggled to put together consists offense. Even so, timely shooting by
Justin Summers,
Hamed Shamseldin and
Tyler Collins kept the game within reach. A late run by the Lakers put them up 12, as the half-time buzzard sounded.
Brockport saw their largest deficit at the 15:03 mark in the second half, as an opposing free throw put the Golden Eagles behind 53-38. However, as we have seen time and time again this season under the leadership of head coach
Greg Dunne, they were able to chip away and mount a comeback. It started with a three-pointer by
Connor McPartland that brought the deficit to 11, before a layup by
Davonte Jones and
Michael O'Hara brought the team even closer with 11:49 left to play. Both teams began trading buckets until the 5:26, with the score 62-55.
The senior guard, Shamseldin, took over the game by first knocking down four straight free throws, before stealing the ball off a full court press and making a tough layup. He followed that up with another two free throw makes that tied the game up at 62-62. The Lakers hit two free throws of their own, but Shamseldin drove to the right of the basket and nailed a fade away mid-range jump shot to tie the game up at 64-64. After finding the team down four with 2:37 left, Shamseldin knocked down two more free throws, and a Collins layup evened the game up yet again. Brockport grabbed the lead with 41 seconds left after a pair of free throws were knocked in by Summers. Summers iced the game with one second left by hitting a shot from the charity stripe to put his team up four.
Shamseldin led the team with 18 points, hitting 11-for-12 from the free throw line and dished out six assists. Summers shot 9-for-10 from the charity stripe, which helped to score 15 total and grabbed eight rebounds.
Josh Nelson went 4-for-4 from three to give him 12 points.
The Green and Gold head on the road on Jan. 30 when they will take on SUNY Fredonia for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
