BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team continued their hot streak on Friday evening, defeating SUNY Cortland 56-41. The Golden Eagles have now won five consecutive State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) games, and hold a record of 6-5 in conference play (8-10 overall).
The win is also Brockport's third straight against the Red Dragons, and fifth out of their last six games dating back to 2015.
The Golden Eagles came out firing to start this game, scoring the first eight points of the contest, all coming off the hands of
Emily Nestler. The Brockport shooters were unable to find their stroke in the first however, allowing Cortland to fight their way back, and trail by just four at the break.
The Red Dragons continued to close the gap early in the second and eventually tied the game at 14-14, but
Schyler Laux was there to answer the call. The Brewerton, N.Y. native buried three straight three point tries in a span of two minutes, putting Brockport back on top by nine with 4:27 left in the half.
Cortland fought back yet again to come to within three, but Laux continued her hot shooting, sinking another deep ball before converting a pair of free throws to keep the Golden Eagles on top by nine heading into the half. Laux did not go back to the line during this contest, and is still perfect from the line this season, shooting 32-for-32.
The Brockport offense was held in check during the third quarter, scoring just nine points in the frame. They made up for it with some stingy defense however, and after a late jumper from
Lindsay Johnson, carried a six point lead into the final frame.
In the fourth, the shooters continued to heat up, as Laux and
Bailey Pratt drilled two three-pointers apiece, while
Brianna Neeley and
Zaria McCullough both hit jump shots as well. The defense continued to be unrelenting, holding Cortland to just seven fourth quarter points.
Laux ended the game with a team-high 23 points on 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. McCullough scored ten while dishing out four assists, while Nestler fell just a few assists shy of a triple-double, dishing out seven to go with her ten points and 11 boards.
The women's basketball team now sits in sole possession of fifth place in the SUNYAC standings, and are just 1/2 game behind Oneonta, who they'll square off with next weekend.
They'll first face Oswego State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., in pursuit of their sixth straight conference win.
