BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team suffered a tight loss against SUNY Geneseo Friday evening by a final score of 69-58. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 (1-4 SUNYAC) with the loss, while the Knights improve to 10-1 (5-0).
Geneseo's defense held Brockport in check in the first quarter of play, as they managed just nine points, led by
Schyler Laux who scored four. The offensive output really started in the second quarter however, as the Golden Eagles closed what was once a 10 point gap to just two at halftime.
It was the three ball that got the Green and Gold rolling, with
Bailey Pratt starting things out before
Krystal Hunter joined in, sinking two consecutive shots from long range. After Geneseo responded with a pair of baskets of their own,
Lindsay Johnson got her jump shot working, sinking a pair of mid-range turnarounds to knot up the score at 28-28.
A jumper in the paint from Laux had the score tied at 30-30 with less than a minute left, but Geneseo got a layup to fall with 0:11 seconds on the clock, taking a two-point lead into the locker room.
After
Zaria McCullough saw a jumper fall to tie the game at 34-34 early in the third quarter, Johnson gave Brockport their first lead of the game when she nailed another jumper in the paint less than 30 seconds later. That lead would stand until the 4:27 mark of the third quarter, when Geneseo's Natalie Alfieri hit a deep three-pointer that sent the Knights back ahead.
That shot sparked a Geneseo run, and despite another jumper from Johnson and a late free throw from McCullough, the Knights carried a six point lead into the final quarter of play.
Brockport began to mount another comeback early in the fourth, as the combination of physical play down low and quality shot making by the guards put them back within two points with less than five minutes to play. It would not hold up however, as the Knights were able to hold on and extend their lead late for their tenth win of the year.
Johnson and McCullough each recorded 14 points in the game to lead the team, while Johnson grabbed a team-high nine boards. Nestler was second on the glass with eight to go with her eight points, while Laux scored nine and dished out three assists.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome the Buffalo State Bengals to Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium for a game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
