ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The College at Brockport women's volleyball team capped off a successful weekend with 3-0 wins against Nazareth College and Elmira College. The victories advance the Golden Eagles record to 15-9 and mark six consecutive wins as they head to their final quarter of the season.
Match One vs. Nazareth College: W 3-0, 25-23, 25-23,
The Green and Gold were in a battle since the first set. The first lead came on a kill by
Meaghan Mastro to put them up 3-2, but was short lived as the Golden Flyers came rushing back. Mastro continued to lead the unit and used back-to-back service aces to help the team reclaim the advantage at 8-7. The Golden Eagles opened the set up a bit with a 5-1 run off of three service aces by
Kerri McHale and kill by
Lauren Hess that brought the score to 13-8. The breathing room was important, as Nazareth inched back multiple times getting to within one as the frame winded down. Brockport held on to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles took control off the bat with two service aces by
Christa Mickol. The largest lead occurred after a kill by
Laiken Fox and a trio of errors by the opponent gave the unit a 15-8, seven-point advantage. The Golden Flyers were not going away easy as they chipped away at their deficit and brought the score to 24-23. Brockport took a timeout and regained their composure as they took the second frame 25-23.
The third frame was tight to start, as both teams traded points all the way to a 6-6 tie. The Green and Gold marched ahead with seven consecutive points that started with four straight oppositional errors. A kill by
Lindsey Luce and service ace by McHale continued the run and it was topped off with another error and the lead was 13-6. The Golden Flyers were unable to mount any sort of comeback and dropped the final frame 25-16 and the match 3-0.
Match Two vs. Elmira College:
Brockport pushed early in the first set, getting off to a 6-0 lead thanks to kills by Fox, Mastro and multiple errors. The Green and Gold pushed their advantage to as many as 9 with a 13-4 mark before Elmira attempted to fight back with a 4-1 run. The unit iced the game with six straight points and took the frame 25-15.
The second set was a story of runs from beginning to end. Brockport used a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 advantage, but a 4-1 response by the opposition evened up the score 7-7. The two teams proceeded to trade three points runs, until the Golden Eagles had the final say with a stretch to end the game thanks to kills by Hamilton and Mastro.
The Green and Gold caught fire to begin the third and final set, jumping out 11-4, but the soaring eagles impressed with a five point stretch to cut their deficit to two. Brockport used a 4-0 run to leap ahead 17-11 and flew without turbulence take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Brockport's next battle will be at home as they host State University of New York Athletic Conference pool play. The first match will be Friday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. against SUNY Potsdam.
