BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport women's volleyball team celebrated the careers of their four seniors on Friday as they hosted day one of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play. The first matchup of the weekend saw a Golden Eagles team defeat SUNY Potsdam 3-1 as they look to lock up a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs. With the win, Brockport holds a record of 16-9 and 5-2 in conference competition.
For the early parts of set one, both units were neck-and-neck with Brockport only holding a one-point advantage at 9-8. At that time, the Green and Gold knocked down four straight points, which included a kill by senior
Cassie Birth and
Lindsey Luce. A couple of minutes later, the Golden Eagles recorded another streak of four consecutive points, with another kill by Luce and two service aces by senior
Maddy Taylor that pushed the lead to 17-10. The Bears failed to inch any closer and dropped the first set 25-18.
The second frame began similarly to the first, with neither team really budging. Brockport was able to inch ahead with a 6-2 run that pushed the score to 17-12. The scoring came off of a trio of kills by
Laiken Fox along with one more for Birth. The Bears cut the deficit to just two before the Green and Gold erupted for seven consecutive points, thanks to three kills by
Lauren Hess, to ice the set and walk away with a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite losing the third set, the green and gold came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth frame, jumping out to a 4-0 lead that they didn't relinquish the rest of the way. They sealed the win with a final 6-1 run, which was highlighted by back-to-back service aces by
Meaghan Mastro and back-to-back kills by
Elena Grossman.
The final weekend of SUNYAC regular season play continues Saturday, Oct. 20 when Brockport takes on Oswego State at 12 p.m. and SUNY Oneonta at 5 p.m.
