BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team lost a non-conference matchup to St. John Fisher College Wednesday night 5-1. The team falls to 4-11 overall, with three games remaining in their season.
Despite both teams having to battle the cold and the rain, the Cardinals caught their rhythm right off the bat, dominating the start of the game offensively. Although the Golden Eagles found themselves at a four-point deficit, the team was able to hold the Cardinals to nine shots total, and five shots on goal in the first half. Freshman
Katelynn Mello was the only one to produce an offensive opportunity for the Golden Eagles in the first half with a strong shot on goal, but unfortunately couldn't outmaneuver the Cardinals goalie to put the team on the board.
The second half remained stagnant on both sides of the field, both teams remaining scoreless almost half way through the second. Just when it seemed the pattern wasn't going to change, sophomore
Katie Ziemba kick started the offense, firing the ball into the circle, ultimately creating a scramble in front of the net, allowing Mello to beat the goalie on the lower left side for her sixth goal of the season. The Cardinals didn't allow the Golden Eagles another opportunity while picking up a fifth goal on the night, securing them the win.
Freshman goalie
Cara Fox stepped up to the plate for the defense, collecting 10 saves in the second half while only allowing one goal on the night.
The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday on the road against SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
