Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Brockport Clinches Playoff Spot With Weekend Sweep

BROCKPORT, N.Y.--  The College at Brockport women's volleyball team won their eighth and ninth consecutive matches as they defeated Oswego State, 3-0, and SUNY Oneonta, 3-1. With the wins, the Golden Eagles move to 18-9 on the season and 7-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, and solidified the No. 3 seed in the conference playoffs.

Match One vs. Oswego State, W 3-0: 25-20, 25-21, 25-21

The Green and Gold got off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind by as many as five points, but they turned it on at the right time. Four kills by Cassie Birth helped launch a 5-0 run to tie the set at 12-12. Following a timeout, the Lakers were able to halt the run for one point before the Brockport advances continued. The Golden Eagles knocked down six straight points on four oppositional errors and kills by Laiken Fox and Meaghan Mastro. Oswego made a small run but it proved to not be enough as the Green and Gold took the first frame 25-20.

A rough beginning once again hit Brockport, as they fell behind 7-2. However, similarly to the first frame, they marched back with four straight points off of a pair of Birth kills and service ace by Maddy Taylor. The first Golden Eagle lead did not come until a 4-0 run pushed the advantage to 22-20. The team finished off the Lakers with three straight points to end the second set, 25-21.

Brockport came out stumbling in the third set, going down 6-1. The Green and Gold chipped away the entire set before they finally evened things up at 19 points apiece. From there the team finished the set on a 6-2 run to take the final frame 25-21.

Match Two vs. SUNY Oneonta, W 3-1: 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-15

After dropping the first set, the Green and Gold turned it on in the second quickly jumping out to a 7-1 advantage on kills by Luce, Lauren Hess and Birth. Both units traded points back and forth with Brockport never letting the Red Dragons get within five points on their way to a comfortable 25-14 victory to tie the match at one set each.

The third frame witnessed a strong start by Oneonta, who took an 8-3 lead, but Brockport continued to show resilience by knocking down back-to-back points to cut the deficit to one and later knocking down another pair of scores to tie the frame at 9-9. The set continued to be neck-and-neck with teams trading points and runs. The Green and Gold suddenly caught fire after a kill by Mastro began an 8-1 run to seal the set three win 25-19.

The fourth and final set looked to be an intense start before a 9-1 Brockport run broke the match open to give the team a 12-3 advantage. The closest the opponent got after that was a six-point deficit that the Golden Eagles quickly moved back to 11 with a 4-0 run. Both teams traded points the remainder of the set before a Luce kill earned them a win in their final SUNYAC regular season game.

Brockport will next travel to Carnegie Mellon University to compete in a non-conference tournament on Oct. 26 and 27. The competition will begin on Friday, Oct. 26 with a 5 p.m. matchup against Ohio Wesleyan.
