PITTSBURGH, PA.—The College at Brockport women's volleyball dropped a hard-fought match against Ohio Wesleyan University, 3-0, in the Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The loss pushed the Golden Eagles to a 19-10 record on the year as they head into the final few matches of the regular season.
The first set for the Green and Gold began slowly as they saw themselves down 7-3. However, they mounted a comeback to even up the score thanks to kills by
Laiken Fox and
Kerri McHale and a couple of opposition errors. Brockport battled the entire frame, using kills by
Lindsey Luce,
Lauren Hess and
Cassie Birth to cut the deficit to one or two points, but were unable to get any closer as the Battling Bishops secured the set 25-22.
The Golden Eagles began the second frame similarly to the first, falling behind 5-1, before a pair of Ohio Wesleyan errors and kills by Mastro and Birth evened things up at 5-5. The Battling Bishops continued to put pressure on Brockport, but the unit was able to respond over and over thanks to clutch kills by Luce, Birth and Fox that helped both stop oppositional runs and create their own. The nail-biting intensity continued to the end when the Green and Gold tied the score at 24-24 and then again at 25-25 before eventually dropping the set 27-25.
Luce led the way for Brockport in kills, recording 11, while Birth contributed ten of her own. McHale led the offense with 28 assists as senior
Maddy Taylor anchored the defense with 17 digs.
The Golden Eagles end their regular season with a pair of tough matchups on Saturday Oct. 27 starting at 11 a.m against host school Carnegie Mellon University and finishing up with Ithaca College at 3 p.m.
