BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The College at Brockport field hockey team was narrowly beaten Wednesday night as they fell to Elmira College 2-1. The most recent loss puts Brockport at 3-7 overall as Elmira moves to 4-6. The tight game was a battle to the finish with the Golden Eagles leading offensively through both halves, but not able to put away the tough Elmira team.
The first half of action was as even as it gets with both teams fighting hard from the start. With a combined 17 shots, both offenses were firing on all cylinders, looking to put themselves on the board first. It was Elmira who struck first with a goal 14 minutes in but Brockport quickly followed with a goal of their own coming from
Meaghan Lurz, her fourth of the season, assisted by
Alyssa Fuccillo. The remainder of the half returned to back and fourth action as both teams were awarded multiple penalty corners. Brockport received a number of opportunities before halftime but were unable to capitalize.
The second half got off to a hot start with a dominating Brockport offensive effort. The Green and Gold forced themselves into back to back penalty corner opportunites followed by a total five shots. Once again the Golden Eagles couldn't capitalize on the scoring opportunity, Â ultimately allowing the Soaring Eagles to return to their domain, resulting in a goal that put Brockport down one with minutes to play. Brockport was quick to regain their momentum and dominated offensively the remainder of the game but to no avail. Â
The Golden Eagles would finish the game with double the amount of shots and shots on goal compared to Elmira, with 21 and 10, while also leading in penalty corners awarded with seven.
Katelynn Mello led Brockport with seven shots, five forcing Elmira's goaltender to make a stop.
Brockport's next matchup will be at home Saturday against Morrisville State (1-8) at 4 p.m..
