BUFFALO, N.Y.-- The College at Brockport women's volleyball team had a successful day at the second State University New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play of the season, taking home two wins. The first victory came against the host team, Buffalo State before defeating SUNY Cortland in their second game of the day. The results move Brockport to 11-9 on the season and 4-2 in SUNYAC play.
Game One vs. Buffalo State: W 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20)
The first half of the set saw a flurry of ties and lead changes until a 12-11 deficit set Brockport on fire.
Meaghan Mastro started the run with a kill before a pair of errors by the Tigers. Mastro recorded another kill and then a service ace by
Shelby Budnick helped push the run to 6-0 and the lead to 17-12. The two units once again began trading points, but the Golden Eagles held off the Buffalo State advances, using a
Cassie Birth kill to seal the set one win.
The second set began with three straight Budnick aces. Despite the Tigers recovering to tie the score at 5-5, Brockport grabbed the lead shortly after on a 3-0 run and never let go. The Green and Gold used four straight points to push the advantage to 17-12. Brockport outscored the Tigers 8-4 the rest of the way to take the second frame 25-16.
The third and final set, began similarly to the second with the Golden Eagles jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a kill and service ace by Mastro. Buffalo State once again proved resilient and pushed the score to 6-6. After a few lead changes, a kill by Mastro and three by
Laiken Fox helped create some breathing room for the team, forming a run of 7-2 and bringing the score to 19-14. The Tigers used a run of their own to cut their deficit to one, but the Green and Gold iced the set and match with a 5-1 final stretch.
Fox (13) and Mastro (10) combined for 23 kills, while
Lindsey Luce added eight more of her own.
Kerri McHale set the tone with 33 assists as
Maddy Taylor hustled on defense with 11 digs. Budnick contributed eight digs along with seven by
Christa Mickol.
Game Two vs. SUNY Cortland: W 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-17)
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start in the first set, using a pair of kills by Fox and a service ace by both Budnick and McHale to take a 7-2 advantage. The Red Dragons rebounded with a trio of long runs to push ahead, but Brockport was not shaken as points by Birth, McHale and Fox helped reclaim the lead. Both units proceeded to trade shots before the Green and Gold racked up five straight points with kills by
Lauren Hess and two by Luce, to once again take the lead, 23-19. Despite a scare down the stretch, Luce and Mastro recorded back-to-back kills to finish up the set.
The story of the strong start continued in the second set as they Green and Gold jumped to a 6-2 advantage. Despite a pair of points by the Red Dragons, Brockport dished out five consecutive points to push the score to 11-4. Cortland fought back to cut their deficit to two, but four kills by Mastro and a pair by Fox led the way towards a 19-11 lead. The Golden Eagles wrapped up the second set with three straight points, including two service aces by Budnick.
Despite dropping the third set, Brockport got back to work in the fourth frame. The team jumped to an 8-3 lead off of a pair of
Abbey Manning service aces and errors by the opponent. Cortland continued to battle, cutting the score to 15-13, before the Golden Eagles put the set out of reach with a 7-1 stretch that saw kills by Birth and McHale and blocks by Hess, Luce and Mastro. The set and match wrapped up with a trio of kills by Brockport including one by Mastro and back-to-back points by Fox.
Fox impressed with 20 kills as Mastro and Luce each contributed with 10. McHale was once again impressive with 46 assists, while Taylor recorded 29 digs.
The Golden Eagles return home on Tuesday, Oct. 9 as they prepare for a non-conference battle against University of Rochester at 6 p.m.
