BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport women's volleyball team earned their third straight victory, with an exciting 3-1 win over University of Rochester. The victory pushes the Green and Gold to a 12-9 mark on the season.
Despite losing the first set of the match, the Golden Eagles regained their composure heading into the second frame. Both teams traded points to start, but a pair of kills by
Meaghan Mastro, one from
Laiken Fox and one by
Kerri McHale helped push Brockport to an 8-4 advantage, one that they would not give up. The Yellow jackets evened things up at 13-13, but a trio of errors helped send the Green and Gold to a 16-13 lead. The University of Rochester once again made a push to cut their deficit to one, but four straight points sealed the set 25-20.
The third frame of the match saw Brockport get out to a strong 7-2 lead, which was led by three kills by
Cassie Birth, a service ace by
Abbey Manning and a kill by
Alexi Hamilton. After trading points with the opposition, the Golden Eagles once again erupted for an 8-2 run that pushed their advantage to 16-7. The stretch was kicked off with a pair of Yellow jacket errors, then Mastro recorded two more kills before Hamilton tallied one more to put them up by nine. The University of Rochester did battle back, but once again the Green and Gold finished strong with a 5-1 closing thanks to a pair of kills by
Lindsey Luce.
The fourth set saw a more intense start with both units exchanging points and runs all the way to a 9-9 tie. Brockport proceeded to open up the match with a 6-1 stretch that saw kills by
Lauren Hess, Birth and Mastro, and a 15-10 lead. The Golden Eagles maintained the five point advantage before once again using a blazing 6-1 finish to wrap up the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
Mastro led the team with 14 kills, with Birth contributing nine and Luce adding eight. McHale helped run the offense with 35 assists, as
Maddy Taylor anchored the defense with 21 digs.
Christa Mickol tallied 18 digs over her own along with 11 by
Shelby Budnick.
