NEW YORK, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team sustained their first loss of the 2018-19 season on the road on Tuesday, falling to Baruch College, 61-49.
The Golden Eagles move to 2-1 on the young season while the Bearcats improve to 4-1 to start their year.
The Green and Gold got off to a good start against the Bearcats, with
Devante Hagins scoring back-to-back layups, before
Chris Atkinson sunk a mid-range jumper and three pointer to push the lead to 9-2. After an almost four-minute scoreless stretch for both units, Hagins hit a bucket to extend the lead to 11-3, before the opposition began to push back.
Another long scoreless stretch impacted the Golden Eagles negatively, as they fell behind 15-11.
Xavier Merriweather stopped the drought with a layup and a
Justin Summers dunk cut the score to 16-15 in favor of the opponent. Another Hagins layup wrapped up the scoring in the first half at the 1:29 mark, and Brockport went into break trailing, 24-21.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles again came out strong, working to cut into the Baruch lead, and by the 15:42 mark, a
Josh Nelson triple followed by a Summers free throw pulled the Green and Gold within two at 29-27. Brockport continued to fight, but soon saw their opponents lead swell to double digits, and following a 9-0 Bearcat run, stared down a 40-29 deficit with 11:14 to play.
A 14-4 run, fueled by a Summers dunk and featuring an
Antonio Alvarez trey looked like the spark the Green and Gold needed as they pulled within one at 46-45, but the scoring would run dry for the Golden Eagles in the final minutes of play. Brockport saw Baruch embark on a 15-4 run to close the contest, closing the door on the win, as the Green and Gold fell 61-49.
Summers and Hagins carried the Brockport offense, both turning in double-double performances on the night. Summers led all scorers with 17 points, 11 boards, two steals and two blocks. Hagins poured in 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, dishing three assists. The Golden Eagle scoring was sparse behind the front men, with
Chris Atkinson the next highest points performer with five and
Tyler Collins adding four points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Brockport will look to bounce back after Thanksgiving break when they open conference play on the road at SUNY Cortland on Nov. 30. The Golden Eagles will open the weekend on Friday against the Red Dragons at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday road contest at Oswego on Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.
