Brockport Earns Win In SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's basketball team comes away with a strong win in their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the year. The final score of the matchup was 78-69 over the Cortland Red Dragons on Friday night. 
 
The Green and Gold's overall record improves to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play,while the Red Dragons fall to 2-2 and 0-1 in SUNYAC play. 
 
This battle proved to be a tight one for a majority of the game. The Golden Eagles got off to a nice start with a quick dunk by Devante Hagins, and then a deep three pointer by Tyler Collins to take an early 5-0 lead over Cortland. Five minutes into the first half Collins converted an and one to extend their lead to 8-4. Chris Atkinson, midway through the first half, nailed a three from way outside the arch to make the score 17-13. The Cortland team kept battling back, with both units taking turns with the advantage. The first half finished 40-37, in favor of Brockport.
 
The Golden Eagles backcourt showed some skills in the first 20 minutes as Collins and Atkinson combined for 19 points and four made threes. Justin Summers showed how good he is defending the rim with two emphatic blocks in the first half. 
 
The Green and Gold came out of halftime firing, going on a speedy 5-0 run to take a 45-37 lead. As Brockport attempted to run away with the game, the Red Dragons kept it close by making six three pointers in the second frame. Summers heated up and played a big role in the second half, scoring 15 of his 17 points. With around five minutes remaining in the game Brockport took a comfortable lead with help from a Montgomery Stroman triple to give the team a 67-58 lead. The final score was 78-69, Golden Eagles over the Red Dragons. 
 
Hagins had a huge game and finished as the top scorer for the Green and Gold with 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and 5 steals. Other top performers for the Golden Eagles were Summers with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks, and Atkinson with 13 points and 5 steals.
 
Brockport's next match is at Oswego State Saturday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. as they will play their second SUNYAC match of the year.
