GENEVA, N.Y. – After a short holiday intermission, The College at Brockport women's basketball team was back in action Tuesday against William Smith College. Despite a strong effort, the team fell at the hands of the Herons 83-70, leaving them 2-3 on their season.
The Golden Eagles struggled to find their rhythm in the first quarter, as the Herons defense forced the team to rely only on opportunities from the perimeter. The Herons definitely did their homework, double teaming
Emily Nestler from the start, ultimately making it difficult for the Green and Gold to take advantage of their leading scorer in the paint. With that being said, Nestler was able to find a couple of holes in the defense for four points along with
Bailey Pratt and
Allison Chiera who were able to create opportunities from outside for four points each as well.
The Herons demanded the long range well into the second quarter, opening the gap significantly. Despite the aggressive nature of the Herons offense, the Golden Eagles were still able to generate some movement, picking up 16 points.
Kylee Rosbrook lead the team through the second, with six points, three rebounds, and a block.
With a rough first half behind them, the Golden Eagles knew they had to change things going forward. The Green and Gold turned the momentum around, putting the first points on the board to start the third quarter, with a quick jumper by Rosbrook. Feeding off of that, the Golden Eagles found their groove offensively, closing the gap to 13 with a quarter left to play. Rosbrook continued to find the bottom of the net, adding eight more points for a total 14 points.
Chiera was a powerhouse on both sides of the ball for the Green and Gold, pulling down four defensive rebounds and contributing four assists on the night. While Nestler couldn't find success offensively, the senior added the height the team needed, collecting seven rebounds. The Golden Eagles put up a valiant effort in an attempt to gain the lead, however ran out of time before they could. In addition to Rosbrook leading offense, Pratt and Chiera would each put up 10 points, followed closely by
Julianna Taylor with nine points and an assist and
Zaria McCullough with eight points and two assists.
The Golden Eagles look to pick things back up this weekend taking on their first conference opponents Cortland and Oswego on the road. Brockport will face off against the Red Dragons on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the Lakers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
