Brockport drops conference opener to Cortland 61-51

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team fell to Cortland 61-51 on Friday night in a battle of the defenses. The team now sits at 2-4 on the season.

The first two quarters came down to how strong the defenses stood, as neither team found great success under the basket. The Red Dragons led 20-19 going into the half, however the Golden Eagles scored at the buzzer to pull the score within one, setting themselves up for a strong second half. Bailey Pratt led the Green and Gold offensively with six points, with Emily Merrill and Kylee Rosbrook securing the boards, each collecting four rebounds in the first 20.

Brockport came back from the half with a mission, picking up the first two scores of the third quarter to regain the lead. With the hot start from Julianna Taylor and Pratt, the Green and Gold were able to use that momentum to put up 17 points in the third quarter alone, while shooting 50% from the perimeter and 75% from the free throw line. Chelsea Henry came up strong for Brockport off the bench, picking up five points, four rebounds, and an assist.

The Golden Eagles struggled to convert on their offensive opportunities in the fourth quarter, allowing the Red Dragons to go on a 19-3 run. Unwilling to accept defeat, Brockport turned the tables, shutting down the Red Dragons, allowing them to go on a 9-2 run while completing 3-4 from the perimeter. Despite a strong finish, the Golden Eagles were unable to close the gap completely.

Allison Chiera's performance under the basket allowed the Golden Eagles numerous scoring opportunities, picking up five rebounds and four steals. The freshman also put up seven points and an assist. Emily Nestler finished the night with an overall strong performance as well, racking up with 12 points, three rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Taylor and Pratt accounted for 20 points collectively.

The team heads to Oswego tomorrow afternoon to cap off the weekend, where they are expected to take on the Lakers at 2 p.m.
